if a guest checks in after midnight give a 50% discount. I mean thousands of rooms go unoccupied every day so wouldn't getting half be better than nothing?

Why won't they do it though?

Because they know anybody booking a room that late is more desperate than they are to fill it. I'm sure accountants figured out the supply/demand curve for such instances a long time ago.

Actually the off strip hotel/motels will do exactly that, but it's usually 1AM or later.

Because the sale is made. Discounts are to increase sales. Last minute let's go to Vegas showing up do you have a room available are a dime a dozen.
