Considering a move to Summerlin and have heard terrible things about healthcare in NV in general but especially the Vegas area. My mom has pretty good insurance here in California and some of it like Medicare is federal, so what state she's in wouldn't matter but a lot of it is state run. So is it really that bad if you have good insurance?

I know someone here on Medicare and he is quite happy with his care. I think it males a big difference what plan you choose. I think we have the reputation of having poor health care but I haven't personally had any issues other than not being able to afford it!

There is a long running joke about healthcare here.

Where do you go for good healthcare in Nevada? The airport!

I've only had a couple routine dr. visits, and some routine tests/x-rays. So far, from a scheduling point of view (appts same day even) it is superior to our experience with Kaiser in CA. However, that may, or may not be a good comparison. I think a lot of it depends on your issue and your insurance.

See what NLVGirl has to say...she's in the industry, and always seems to give a pretty fair analysis.

It's only as bad/good as your health insurance provider.

I used to not think highly of healthcare in Las Vegas, but my opinion is that you can find some very good physicians here if you do your homework. I think that is true no matter where you live. My father has had a series of health issues, and up to this point, we have found an excellent cardiologist, cardiovascular surgeon, and oncologist. I am a proponent of working with physicians who have gone to American medical schools and have done their training here. We have had no problem finding physicians with these credentials and who appear to be solid practitioners. We have had experience with both St. Rose Dominican Hospital - Siena Campus and Sunrise Hospital for both emergency and non-emergency situations, and I thought the care provided each time was good.

As the metro area continues to grow, additional medical resources are being added. Several years ago, the Cleveland Clinic established a footprint downtown with the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. There are physicians with impressive credentials there who treat brain and neurological issues. They also recently established a urology practice here. Finally, UNLV will soon have its own medical school, and the first class is scheduled to start in 2017.

I think the problem that I find here, is that if you have a sudden emergency-ish situation and have to first go through an experience in an ER, you are stuck with a roll of the dice. If their testing comes back inconclusive, then you have to go back to your primary care doctor, and that's where the fun begins.

If we had a UCLA type medical center, you could get more testing done usually under 1 roof and those test would be in 1 system that any team of doctors (notice, I said TEAM) under the UCLA umbrella could access. Wouldn't matter if your neurologist was at Ronald Regan or your neurosurgeon at the Spine Hospital in Santa Monica. Having to have every freaking office out here. in Las Vegas call around to all the different diagnostic places and different doctors to have them fax your results or having to have the patient go and pick up the actual films is just plain dumb.

I speak from both sides of this experience, having had to chase down the care (and follow up care) I needed here in Las Vegas VS. me, ultimately having a seamless experience when I finally got fed up and went to UCLA for my care. I even flew out there and did one day round trips for follow-up care for 1 solid year. It was well worth it, in my estimation.

Thankfully I had incredible insurance that allowed me to head to any of the top hospitals in the country. I chose UCLA because of the proximity to Nevada and the ease of follow-up care.

For me personally, I have yet to find a good doctor here that wants to do things on my terms. I do not want to be their guinea pig and go for a million tests/procedures. I just want to go to the doctor when I have a problem, and stay away after that. Maybe go once or twice a year. All they want to do here is poke/prod/prescribe/cut. Suck the insurance dry.

There is one doctor that I know of, supposed to be good, but is pricey, and he is a concierge doctor. He is in Henderson. Dr. Evan Allen. Apparently he used to be the best doctor, but since he went the concierge route, he became a very expensive doctor. He is probably still really good, doesn't follow the same BS conventional doctors do, so if you have the money, he will fix what ails you. Mostly with diet. He is plant based.
Good luck. You will need it.

Yes, it's only a 45 minute flight to L.A. and one hour to San Diego, and, once there, it's a 45 minute train ride to the Mexican Border, with some very competent, quality medical specialists in Tijuana.

I'm in love with the Angeles Hospital in the Rio Zona district of Tijuana, a medical tourism hospital erected there in 2004. Top notch all the way, like going to a 5-star hotel. And, anyone that works there, must speak good English. And they also do stem-cell procedures not yet approved in the U.S.

Yes, there's some quality medical specialists in this city, but you need to research like crazy to find the right ones, as there's a number of Doctor rating sites available now, which can be hair-raising as well, given those that have had good experiences with this particular Doctor, and those that have had bad experiences.

And you may even want to check out the physicians in St. George, UT, 130 miles away.

I'm actively doing philanthropic work in the local medical community to better the healthcare in southern Nevada. I've also been following and updating the developments with healthcare here in this thread.

I once read that the imaging done in Las Vegas is 3X what's done in the Midwest and the East Coast. True or False?

I know that from own experience, over something so simple as a Baker's Cyst. I first had ultrasound done, and I was referred to one of those factory-like orthopedic clinics, where I was told, in addition to the ultrasound, I needed an Xray. And, at that time, I was in so much pain, I could hardly get in and out of a car! Xray done, then they demanded I get an MRI. Got the MRI, and they said it wasn't definitive enough, they wanted another! And, why wasn't imaging offered at that ortho clinic, thus being forced to drive to another part of town for the imaging?

That's when I told my Orthopedist: I'm off to Tijuana to the Angeles Hospital. Once there, my Orthopedist told me all I really needed was the Ultrasound reading! And he told me that in the U.S., with Dr.'s owning/operating so many of these imaging factories, they're going to try and get you to have as many images as possible.

2X in the past when I ran into medical "roadblocks" in this city, I simply scooted on down to Tijuana.
