Wondering if we have any good rail tours that are not too far away ..say a one day drive to get to the train.

Not sure it's what you're looking for, but there's the Amtrak Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Seattle. Reserve a room and you get access to the Pacific Parlour Car. Wife and I plan to take it to Seattle, spend a few days there (possibly including a drive to Vancouver, BC), and then fly back.

Look for tours that leave from I-40 to the Grand Canyon. Flagstaff or Williams AZ.

Wow, You really have to be specific in this forum! I don't have quite 2,000,000 views yet but I'm going to call it a tie. The OP wasn't clear enough about what he was driving, so if it was a car cre8lite is right, if it's a golf cart or something like that than SoCalCpl2 is right. Please don't feel the need to thank me.
