Also, a garage is good for storage of other things besides cars. For many people it's only for storage of things besides cars.

When I see houses with three car garages, I wonder how many garage bays actually have cars in them.

True! They do tend to become a dumping ground!

This is what is wrong with America. We hoard too much stuff, cheap unnecessary stuff.

I would have a 3 car garage if we could find a house that we liked that had one. We will have a 3rd car and I'd also like a spot for my workshop. You can never have too many garage spaces, IMO.

Maybe where you're looking. What I think is wrong with America is generalizations about how "we" all live.

As for carport vs. garage, other than the paint, I would think an un-air-conditioned garage would cause as much damage to the tires and battery as leaving it under a carport when the temps are over a hundred.

I think the point being made was that a carport would provide shade from UV light, which is very damaging to paint, plastic and tires.

I think a garage has utility beyond just parking. If configured correctly, it can provide a lot of storage for stuff and parking. It's also is locked, which has obvious advantages. It can also be workspace. And, if necessary, it can be converted to indoor space.

In my poking around in LV real estate listing. I look for three car garages, because they're usually set up a 2+1 bays. If I bought one, the single bay would likely get insualted and ACed, and turned into shop/project space.
