This duopoly with Harrahs ( now calling themselves Caesars, but it's still the same hedge fund guys that ran Harrahs) has not been good for this city overall. If they keep gouging our tourists and doing things like this people might just stop coming.
I don't disagree with your opinion on Caesar's and MGM, but it seems evident that nothing they have done to this point is going to stop people from coming considering last year was another record year of visitation.

Are you serious? That place is a hotbed for poor families visiting from California and a gold mine for the hotel itself. Do you think anyone cares that the amusement area for kids is a dated a relic of the 1970's?

No, they toss their kids there and could care less if it offers them something decent or not. Circus Circus is like a cheap *****, it gets the job done and covers all fronts when dealing with poor Mexicans visiting for California... IMO, it is going nowhere any time soon.

I wonder how much water will be saved by eliminating the fountains? I enjoy them myself, and agree that they are iconic, but so were many other things in Vegas that are no longer around.

I'm not certain saving water is a concern in that regards. The Wynn is building a huge water park and tearing up their golf course to do it.

In regards to water the article cited that with the Wynn building their new water park and with the new Resort World to be styled like a modern Shanghai right across from it, with the first towers finished and taking guests by 2020, that this would change the main tourist spot draw on the Strip to this area further North, and the Bellagio fountains would then become an outdated free show attraction having run for 20 years prior.

I also recall reading about an extreme sports hotel with a proposed water park going in on the South end of the Strip near the new Raiders Stadium. It would offer all kinds of extreme sports events like at the X games.

There's two different renderings. One is made out of repurposed shipping containers above and was published later. This one below was the earlier one.

And here's an update on "The Edge" (Vegas' Extreme Sports Resort) from this year. I think it would be a good place for a bachelor party. https://vegas.eater.com/2017/3/2/147...resort-details

irrc, the water park will end up saving water vs maintaining the golf course

So it's true in both cases for the Wynn and The Edge water parks as they're both tearing up golf courses. That could have been the case with the Raiders Stadium too if they'd picked the Bali Hai golf course property as their first choice instead.

It is actually pretty simple. Grass and water surface use roughly the same amout of water. An acre of grass and an acre of water will lose roughly 7 acre feet of water to the environment in Las Vegas. In fact my pool with electric cover uses far less water then the similar sized lawn next to it.

What do you mean? Shanghai is one of the most modern cities in China, if not the world.

I know that when Steve Wynn bought the Dunes, the property came with a large holding of water rights. That's how the lake came to be. I guess if they fill it in they could sell the water (lease out the water rights.)

But the fountains are a HUGE part of that property's branding. Given how popular they are, I don't see how they could get rid of them without hurting the image of the resort.

It's been about 20 years since I have been to Las Vegas. I have been wanting to visit again ever since, but after reading stuff like the above, I think I might just cross it off my bucket list. From what I can tell, most of the stuff I enjoyed about Las Vegas, is now gone, or will be gone soon. The best part about Las Vegas was just walking down the strip and enjoying all the free entertainment. Since I'm not into boutique shopping, I'm not sure that Las Vegas offers anything for me anymore.
