Read somewhere the worst ever Chicxago chill index was -89 F. I expect an Iowa blizzard would be worse.

Was in a blizzard in Rochester NY some years ago where the temperature was well below zero and the wind was above 60 mph. Had to wear a plastic bag over the parka to go outside. The wind would actually drive snow through an overlapped zipper.

We had one winter in the late 70's/80's that was so bad we put plastic over the front door and used the back door. The prevailing wind was pushing through the storm door and the inside door. Gave up on weatherstripping.

Wind in Iowa is bad. Corn does not stop wind and when it's harvested you lose what little resistance there might be because it's now just dirt. All winter - just dirt.

The wind in Las Vegas: it is not the same for the whole valley. Some area's are windier than others. So maybe you live in a windier area and have experienced too much wind compared to some of us that don't get the really high winds on a regular basis.

The wind storms for which we get frequently in the spring and a bit in the fall is just part of living in the "great basin", the Mojave Desert, geography dictates that and has been going on since the mountain ranges rose from the seabed millions of years ago.

Transient Las Vegas? That is that.

Low wage paying Las Vegas jobs? That too is just that. I live here but don't work here.

It depends on where you live in the Metro area, the particular neighborhood and the friends you make. Be careful on all that! A lot of TRASH but a lot of nice people as well. Pick your battles.

Super cheap cost of living, cheap utilities, fairly cheap fuel for cars, no state income taxes. Low property tax. Sales tax is hight but you can control that in what you buy.

I am not a Las Vegas native nor a Las Vegas cheerleader but in the right areas, it is not that bad.

What he's saying shouldn't be dismissed outright. After all, Vegas is the suicide capital of the country. The reasons for that do include some points brought up by the OP. Of course without being a drug addled gambling maniac, your life here can work out just fine. I personally miss trees, rivers, distinct seasons and a stronger sense of community and at some point will depart.

Given there's lots of sand in the desert here, it's natural that many will have their heads buried in it.

An Economic Recession is due any day now, and a big real estate crash a la 2005, so hold off on that house purchase, for in another couple years you can buy 2 or 3 houses for the price of one, just like in 2006/2007!
