Yesterday my daughter visited UNLV. While she liked it my wife was not happy with the area surrounding it(granted this was just one fairly quick visit so she may have rushed to judgment). Is the area around campus rough? fyi...she would live on campus.

Yes, the area around the campus is polar opposite from, say, Stanford (in Palo Alto), but not as bad as Columbia (Morningside Heights & Harlem) or the University of Chicago (South Side of Chicago).

At any rate, I think of UNLV as mostly a commuter school. What is drawing her to consider UNLV?

Older apartments that haven't been remodeled in a long time sit along Maryland Pkwy. Tell her to stay on campus and not venture to far out and she'll be fine.

The area around UNLV is not great. If I was going to school there I would have great locks and I would probably not go out alone at night. I wouldn't be afraid but I would be careful and observant.

Many years ago I dated a girl that went to UNLV. The campus seemed to be fairly safe, but the surrounding areas were not great. I would research here: https://www.unlv.edu/news-story/unlv...tistics-report

No kids are just going to stay on campus most of the time, that's about as lame a campus as you'll ever find for its size. Very few students live on campus, has to be mostly those on full scholarship and perhaps international students. The area is sketchy but so are a lot of areas relatively close to campus. Many students live a few miles away in even worse areas.

The big complaints about the UNLV area aren't so much the look of the neighborhood, but the how mediocre it is. Has no college feel, its just another part of Maryland Pkwy. There are no real college bars, restaurants or traditions. Has zero college town feel. That's what keeps a lot of potential students away, even more than the worries about safety.

Basically only reasons to go to UNLV: (1) scholarship (2) in state tuition (3) interest in hospitality/casino management degree
