Hi there,
We are looking at moving next year from San Diego to Henderson. My son is 13 years old with Autism, he is in the moderate level of ASD, able to learn and retain information, just struggles with anxiety and social development. He's currently in 7th grade, at a 3rd grade level overall. The district we are currently in is amazing, but they are pushing us towards certificate instead of Diploma bound. I've opted out of the state testing so that won't have an effect on his goals, while we work on his test taking skills. I've always asked them to challenge him more academically because I know he can do it, he just needs a bit more support. So my question is what are the best schools (middle and High School) for kids with moderate autism in the Las Vegas area? We're currently looking at Henderson because of the school district, but am open to other areas. Because we're used to Southern California housing costs, our budget is very healthy for the area.

Why wouldn't you just wait until he is out of high school to move?

A "certificate of completion" is not a bad thing, by the way. Your son could still attend a Community College.

Also, if he decides to take the GED or the HiSET (both recognized by the State of California), he will have the equivalent of a high school diploma.

How do I know this?

Some of my caseload are former Special Education students (some on the Spectrum). I have a heart for people on the Spectrum because I have a close friend and family member who are both on the Spectrum.

Something that the State is currently trying to address is the prevention of ASD people from ending up homeless. They tend to be vulnerable in the workplace and their special needs can be challenging to accommodate for many employers, so it is a huge concern.

Attached below is information on the GED and HiSET tests.
