I'm a retired audio professional (recording and live sound engineer) and now work for a company that sells high end audio and video equipment and designs home theaters. CES and CEDIA are shows where we meet with company reps to see new products and learn about them. It's not just for consumers, it's an industry show too.

Wouldn't you know it, I was living in Vegas until recently but had to move to Florida for a while. I would have gone to see all the new A/V products (especially the advancements in TV technology) if I was there but didn't feel like flying across the country for it. Next year, I plan to be living in Vegas again and will attend.

How do you figure tightwads? Nothing cheap gets shown on the floor. Freebies used to be good but now it's a lot of cheap crap you probably won't even want to take home. If someone needs a room or a meal they certainly won't want to pay the highest prices of the year.

And the average Vegas resident is a tightwad, they would go there and say wow that new TV looks great, but I'd rather buy one thats like a 3 year old model on Black Friday so I can get a TV for $200. They most certainly aren't the target market of CES vendors.

He or she is talking about tipping. The strippers and servers in town much prefer the SEMA crowd.

I could be wrong, but I thought CES wasn't open to the average Las Vegas resident. You need to be in the IT industry to get in and it costs a lot of money if your company doesn't buy your ticket.

Free to get in to the exhibits with some planning,if not it might cost $50-100, but you have to register as an industry participant. If your current employer doesn't sound remotely connected (and there are so many kinds of companies involved now almost everyone is connected) its easy enough to create a consulting company name, print out 100 biz cards for $10 and then use them to get in and get some lousy freebies. No one is going to background check.

It was a $300 entrance fee for CES.

My wife and I were enjoying our buffet at Makino last night when busloads of Koreans and Japanese showed up. All were CES participants. Unfortunately, we had to leave early because the buffet turned into a madhouse.
