Interesting article about the lowest paid jobs in every state. Does this mean dealers are paid less than fast food workers!? That seems crazy to me because these guys and gals are customer facing and can make the experience really good for the customers. How do the casinos even find people qualified to be dealers with such crappy pay?

No we don't do that here. Everyone gets at least minimum wage-dealers pool tips.

Actually I noticed the article says "one of the lowest paid" with a range between 18k-26k so I guess they were just using dealers as an example.

Well $18k is under $9/hour so I still believe your premise holds true. What sort of tips are they collecting, especially if they're pooled? Also, do they split the pool with other positions like is common in food?

Since some of these dealers have to know math decently to make sure the casino is protected, or do the dealers are the tougher games get paid more? Say does a blackjack dealer get paid less than a roulette dealer since they have to be able to quickly calculate hundreds of different odds?

That's what I wondered. It doesn't seem like the average Walmart greeter or McWorker or other type of service worker who are typically the lowest paid, would be qualified to walk into a casino and get a dealer job. But maybe I am wrong since I don't know what type of skills the casinos are looking for when hiring for those jobs.

I live in Nevada and dealers, cocktail waitresses, bartenders, etc do well here. Tips make all the difference. People tend to stay in these jobs forever and some have college degrees and do better in the casinos.

when i worked for mgm, the dealers were catered to - they had their own private lounge that the rest of the employees could not use. these lounges included big screen tv's, comfy couches, massage chairs. the rest of us worker bees got wooden tables & chairs.

of course, that was pre-2008
