House I bought and moved into a few months ago sat empty for 6 months until they could get it on the market. The irrigation system was set for winter and thus didn't water enough when it got hot so several plants died. I need to replace about 10 things, planning to do mostly desert plants, cactus, succulents etc.

I assume it should be done before it gets cold here (December?), but wonder if it's too hot now to put in new stuff. I reprogrammed the irrigation so everything that survived is doing OK.

Appreciate any advice or tips. Thanks.

I was in a similar situation and landscaper recommended doing it in the spring around March or April. You probably don't want to plant before winter because they may not survive cold.

Thanks, good to know. Helps the budget too, lol. Too many "new home" expenses, landscaping is kind of a low priority right now.

Late summer is best for anything that goes dormant over the winter. That will give it a little Fall growing time and then all of Spring to take off. Frost is not really a big problem here.
