Not so anymore. "On-call" now means "we own you 24/7". There are many IT related jobs available now because of the large data-centers here. But quite a few are this abusive "on-call" type. A call-out doesn't mean there is an emergency like it used to. On-call now means they will work you completely at there discretion with no concern of your work-life balance.

It really is awful, you are under a weird, constant low level anxiety. Never completely relaxed, no days to look forward to. Nothing to really look forward to.

I'd take lower pay with a schedule any day.
I worked in IT my whole career and the bold is SPOT ON.
I would never have made it beyond a year with a situation like the OP describes.

OP: Calculate what your hourly wage is when you add the nine hours a day you are waiting for an 'on-call' request to work. That is your real pay rate.

Take the steady job at the lower wage and fill in with a bit of part time work as necessary.
You cannot live without your life!

In the type of career he's looking to develop in Vegas, given his situation and the choice of jobs he's presented, this is exactly the WRONG advice.

Not necessarily, my girlfriend left MGM to deal at Wynn for a year. MGM took her right back.

Note she went to another strip casino, not some locals joint out in the the county. That works. If the OP had a full time opportunity at restaurant in a major strip casino, I'd tell him to go for it. But the career path in the hospitality business in Vegas goes from the off strip / locals joints to the strip, not the other direction.

Not really relevant, dealers are disposable and aren't really treated fairly by casinos (not to mention casino patrons).

My post that was removed was not off topic. He quoted my name but changed it. I was trying to correct it. My name is PinkString, not Pinksteady.

I guess I'm missing your point. If dealers are disposable and cooks aren't, wouldn't a dealer be less likely to get hired back?

Maybe, dealers are plentiful though, good cooks probably not as much. I'm speculating on the cooks part though.
