I'm meeting a friend in Vegas for a few days in January. I really want to show him some of DVNP.
I went there last Christmas Day but that's the only time I've been there and someone else was driving.

It's huge and has many cool features. I don't expect to see it all. I'm not sure where we'd stay either. On Christmas we dined at the resort there and it was mucho dinero. I'd rather not pay a fortune but will if it comes to that. I'm retired military. There may be a discount.

Any suggestions for an itinerary?

Just found out there's been a room booked for us. In the interest of good manners and friendship I'm thinking we will do an out-and-back day trip. Hopefully we can get an early start.

Scotty's Castle starts their tours the weekend we're there. Grand reopening.

A nice trip is to drive up to Beatty, see the outdoor art exhibit and ghost town down the road at Rhyolite, and spend the night in Beatty.

From there you can make the drive through Death Valley see Zabriskie Point and whatever else you want. Take the back way down through Pahrump and back to Las Vegas. The Red Rock Overlook is also on the way back, a short drive off of Blue Diamond.

just an fyi - i don't think scottys castle is ready for it's grand re-opening quite yet. they are are doing random tours as a way to raise $$$ to help fund the restoration. i don't want to disuade you from touring the facility, as it's still a great tour, but it's not ready for back to business as usual.

it's my understanding the grand re-opening will happen late 2020

I saw that on the site but yes, some exterior hiking tours.

This trip has been reduced to a day trip and I'm thinking that won't be included.

I’m also thinking of doing a day trip; what will you go see while in Death Valley?

I was invited there by friends last Christmas day. It was a loooong day. I agreed to a tour and dinner.

"Pick you up at 6!"
AM??
It was about 8pm or so when I got home - my poor dogs.

My very favorite attraction were the kilns. I can't see getting there AND Badwater.
