As of today, 1.5% national mortality rate. 3/15 still peak infections. Nevada sits at 1.9% mortality rate as of today.

Well that's interesting. When I looked up this data at CDC I'm seeing anything between about 0.5% and 2.0% as being typical on any given year. Some years are worse than others. Perhaps you're quoting the overall population mortality rate? I'm discussing total diagnosed cases vs mortality of those diagnosed cases.

At any rate, as a direct comparison to a similar pandemic, Swine Flu (H1N1) in 2009 has very similar infection and mortality rates to COVID-19 thus far, but we didn't shut the whole country down over it. And again, in the context of the time, Swine Flu wasn't considered a separate pandemic in the way in which they've been treating COVID-19. It was just a particularly virulent strain of the flu for that year. The same could be said about SARS before it.

One major difference I see during this pandemic, is that in 2009, the iPhone had been out for about 6 months and Android was just released. People didn't have 24/7 news, facebook, and twitter popups happening on their phones fomenting hysteria. We also didn't really have the 24 hour news cycle with talking heads blabbering on all the time riling everyone up into a frenzy. We also didn't have entire political parties absolutely hell-bent on making the current administration look bad through any and every means possible, up to including straight up making up news stories, plastering them everywhere, and then quietly retracting them weeks later.

Remember, one of the EOs Obama signed authorized the use of propaganda, a practice that used to be illegal.

I quoted the exact stats earlier on, not sure if it was this specific thread, bit Swine Flu infected something like 60 Million, something like 247K hospitalized, and something like 26K mortalities, if memory serves me correctly.

We did not have any of this hysteria going on, then. And it is, absolutely, hysteria.

We've got people buying out bottled water like we're about to have a hurricane and the pumps will be offline for weeks - have the pumps at Lake Mead shut off yet? So far as I know, the 3rd "straw" isn't even turned on, yet.

We've got people buying up entire cases of canned goods, flour, meats, rice, beans, etc like they're going to be locked in their houses for years, yet none of these supplies have even run out, nor have they stopped being manufactured. The stores simply can't stock the items fast enough and people are buying them all as soon as they go on the shelf.

We have entire campaigns to shut down sellers on eBay and Amazon who are selling TP and hand sanitizer, almost like they don't know what wash cloths or sponges are, and don't know how to wash their hands with SOAP.

We've got people posting youtube videos crying in hysterics that they cannot get pampers and baby wipes for their kids, or toilet paper and OMG the sky is falling! Gimme a break. I pointed out on another board that most countries don't even use baby wipes, disposable diapers, or toilet paper, and of course the thread was immediately 404'd.

Its absolutely panic and hysteria.

Our physician friends are comparing it to the swine flu numbers too. Only time will tell.

Found this interesting link of past pandemics for perspective.

This situation is going to accelerate the retail apocalypse. This is the year that Fry's Electronics probably dies. I imagine Macy's, JC Penney's and Kohl's are going to shut down 1/3 of their stores by Jan 2021 as well.

Darn - Hope not. Fry's is my candy store. Go there sometime just for the smells in the component aisles. Spent my youth and working years embedded in that stuff. And still play around a little bit. Looking at oscilloscopes in the last couple of months so I may yet rejoin the herd.

Check out this youtube channel. He's been documenting a lot of dead malls and stores on his videos. They've already not been able to keep their shelves stocked in several stores including the one in Vegas.

In the 2nd video they talk about how they pulled product from multiple stores to stock their Vegas store during CES and it still felt like a dead store.

Frys has been on the brink of death for a long time. There's less and less in there every time I go.
I have been buying most of my electronics stuff from them since I got here. The last year or 2 I can't find what I need there.

Fry's has been quietly dying for a while now. I went to Fry's here back in November, and half the aisles were empty. If you dig around on youtube you can find a couple videos from people inside Fry's showing the empty shelves. On another board I am on, there was some discussion about this at the time. Some people supposing that Fry's may have been selling down to file a bankruptcy at the end of the xmas season. That doesn't seem to have come to fruition, though.

Macy's and JCP are typically mall anchors. If you're not aware of what's been going on with malls the past few years, go look up Dan Bell's Dead Mall Series on YouTube.

Kohl's is typically an anchor in "power center" style strip malls. I haven't seen many of these dying. The last time I was in the Kohl's down on Blue Diamond, it looked like shopper numbers were pretty typical.

A lot of manufacturing centric areas of the US no longer have the populations they once had. I suspect that's one of the reasons a lot of these places are dying. If you spend any time reading comments on some of these dead mall videos you'll often find comments indicating that the stores in question didn't actually shut down per-se, they just moved to a better/newer location where the shoppers are now.

A lot of these malls were built in economic development zones where the master plan never fully came to fruition. After many years of mediocre performance, the owners are finally calling it quits and looking for redevelopment.

Here in Vegas, I think Boulevard Mall and Meadows Mall are two examples. Both have taken some steps to branch out beyond what was typically available in a mall setting. The last time I went to Galleria, it looked mostly okay. Some empty storefronts but by no means deserted.
