Man begging to get quotes to replace A/C unit. House is single story 1503sq ft. Got one quote from one place for a Amana 3.5 ton for $8000. Other place says $14000 for a trane 4 ton unit????
Any knowledgeable one here knows 3.5 ton or 4 ton would be the right size???? $8000 sounds reasonable but 14k...no!!! Still gonna do 2 more quotes. But unsure of right a/c size!! Thanks

Typically they would just use the same tonnage as the old unit unless there were complaints. The normal rule of thumb for Vegas is one ton per 400sf, but newer well insulated homes may be able to use a little less. Oversizing here is not a big problem because it's not humid. Honestly either 3.5 or 4 ton would probably work, I would just match what is already there. The cost difference in the unit 3.5 vs 4 ton isn't much.

Definitely look at the warranty between quotes. How long? Parts only? Parts + labor? Who is providing the warranty, the company or the manufacturer? Keep in my labor is a huge cost component of bigger AC repairs so having a labor warranty is a big difference. If it's the company providing the warranty, are they going to be around for 5 or 10 years of the warranty?

Is your AC unit on the roof or on the ground outside?

My house is between 1,300 - 1,400 square feet. We have a four ton A/C. I paid about what you were quoted at the low end to replace both the A/C and the heating units.

Can get a Amana 3.5 ton 14 seer $7600. Also a Amana 16 seer $8200.
And last a Oxbox (chinese) Trane owns 16 seer $7800.
Not going to bring up the $14000. Trying to see how to get the Neveda power rebate which would be $750.

Got 2 more companies coming the next couple of days so we'll see!!

Since you have a split unit, there are more steps for the installer to perform and basically more opportunity for them to screw up or do a poor quality job. They need to flush the lineset, hopefully perform a triple evac down to at least 500 microns with nitrogen break, and flow nitrogen while brazing. They can skip some of these steps (they shouldn't but many installers do, doing it right takes time), but that can be the difference between a system that lasts 10 years and one that lasts 20.

Bottom line, stick with a reputable installer.

600sf per ton...a 3 ton would work for you...assuming this is a ground unit, definitely shop around... here (not Vegas), just replaced ours with a 4 ton was just under $5k
