I saw a photo of the city limits sign for Boulder City, and besides the standard signs you see when entering a city such as signs for the Rotary Club,Lions Club etc. This one had a)a sign for Republican Women and b)'Patrol by Citizens in Private Vehicles'.
What's up with that?

Nope. No Gambling in Boulder City. They drink reasonably well.

To the sign they have some sort of mobile neighborhood watch.
See..

Some of the Sun Cities do a similar thing though they actually have patrol cars driven by the volunteers.

I wouldn't call a dry town weird,I've seen plenty of 'em. There's a couple of them in NJ,there's Gatlinburg TN and I even heard about things like that in Utah.

LOL! Having lived in Boulder City for 12 years, I just gotta respond.

True, there are no liquor stores in BC - one of the last vestiges of having been a company town owned by the Feds - but it's not a "dry town". Booze is readily available in the grocery stores, restaurants, at community events, and, OMG , there are even a couple of bars in town. It's also true that there is no gaming in BC. It's the only jurisdiction in NV that prohibits gaming, and this is also a vestige of having been a Fed town. Both of these laws ("no liquor stores" & "no gaming") are in the City's charter and were required by the Feds when the city was formed.

Re the private patrols: It is called "Citizens on Patrol"; they are volunteers and it's essentially a town-wide "Neighborhood Watch" program. Yes, they do drive around in private vehicles, but their vehicles are marked w/the group's name.

As to whether or not BC is weird, well .... "different strokes", ya' know??

Does this help with the crime rate in your opinion, and do you think parents feel safer about their childrens well being with this in place?

theace,
I don't know what effect, if any, the Citizens on Patrol program has had on BC's crime rate. Neither the City's nor the BCPD's website provide such stats; perhaps some other website might. BC has a low crime rate to begin with and the community in general tends to look out for one another. I can't address your question of how parents feel about the C.O.P. program because I don't have kids. Hopefully there is a BC mom or dad on the forum who will respond.

FWIW, BC is worlds away from Henderson & LV and the issues (and lifestyles) those areas present. Many joke that BC is kind of like Mayberry. Hmmm, compared to LV & Hend, it IS Mayberry!

Yup. The lowest crime area in the Valley or very close. Henderson is quite good but I would estimate Boulder City half that.
