Hello everyone!! I'm a 31 year old single Male who maybe moving to the vegas area. I am a mental health care provider and I just interviewed for a job with the VA there. I have been wanting to move to vegas since 2015 but it just hasn't panned out. I have been reading and watching the news about vegas as far as prices [ cost of living] and crime and it makes me feel like I missed the boat. However if I get the job I plan in going there and wanted to know some good areas between 1300-1600 in vegas/henderson? For background purposes I am original frm Virginia beach but I have lived in CT MN FL and KS. I for fun I love sports concerts trying new food, and I'm trying to be more active and started going back to the gym. Any recommendations on living there would be helpful!!

Yes, you'll be able to find multiple rentals in that price range in very nice areas. When we relocated back in 2019, we got a 3BR apartment in the Peccole Ranch area for just a hair over $1600/mo. Just looked and prices are about the same.

Since you'd be working with the VA, do you know which facility you'd be operating out of? That could determine where you want to live depending on what sort of morning commute you want. There is the main hospital up in the NE corner of NLV but they have several other facilities throughout out the Valley where you could "home base" from. After COVID hit, they pushed a lot of the social workers out into these other locations. Some are in decent areas of town, some are definitely not.

I assume you want to live fairly close to work because driving in traffic eats up time and gas. Let us know where your work location is and we can suggest areas to look at and avoid. IMO, you would not want to live in Henderson and work in North Las Vegas. The good news is, rent prices have dropped a lot recently. A good realtor can suggest zip codes, I had one do that for me when I was looking for a house to buy in 2019.

If you will be working in the main VA hospital despite the bad wrap of North Las Vegas there are many new apartments being built near the hospital and lots of new restaurants in the area.

If you are in the main VA hospital in North LV, anything along the 215 will be less than a 15 min drive, Alliante is a nice new area, we are north of Centennial Hills in the NW valley, and it's really nice and less than 15 min to the VA.

Default Nuclear bomb testing in NV and quality of water

This thread was started in July 2023, and Im wondering how the OP is doing in NV?

Anyone thinking/wanting to move to NV, but concerned about the quality of water there as I am?
The nuclear bomb testing site is only 65 miles from Las Vegas.
The nuclear testing began in 1950s to 1990s, and for 98 times. The testing began again as Russia recently revoked Cold War treaty and restarted its nuclear bomb testing.

Any thoughts?

based on the fact that there are ~2 million people that live in/around vegas, i'm going to say none of them are concerned with the quality of water

Ummm there are plenty of people concerned about the fact that tap water is undrinkable. I don't know if many blame nuclear testing for it but half a glass in and you are quickly reminded it's gotta be some of the worst tasting water for any major city in the US. And yeah nice they don't mention the water is recycled, yep even poop water gets shot through filters and the wetlands in hopes it gets somewhat cleaned. Its not effective.

Beyond the water issues, which are certainly real and exist in nearby New Mexico and Arizona as well, there are quite a few other downsides to living in Las Vegas. I've visited several times and lived in Reno for years. Living in a gambling town can be depressing and always invites some shady people.

Crime is much higher in Vegas compared to a lot of other places too. People will talk about the F1 track and the acts that the casinos bring in, but F1 is a once a year thing that hardly any of the locals will go to (mostly they'll be inconvenienced by it), and those casino entertainers are there to bring in more gamblers.

While I admire the straight forwardness of getting most of a state's revenue from prostitution, booze and gambling, it's just not a good business model for going forward.

I have a whole house water filter in my garage. I drink tap water, it smells and tastes fine. Actually better than fine, I've lived in other places and travelled a lot, the tap water at my house tastes far better than many places. I find it has no smell or taste.

I used to buy water filters for my refrigerator, but at $50 a pop every six months, I stopped buying them.

If you are concerned about drinking water, you can get a filtration system installed under your kitchen sink.
