My husband, myself and our 2 young (3y/o and 5m/o) children may be relocating to Nellis AFB within the next 6-8 months and we were thinking of getting a house. His aunt lives in Henderson, so someplace halfway between there and Nellis would be nice, but we don't know which neighborhoods are good, family-oriented neighborhoods and which ones we should avoid. We're looking to spend between $100,000 and $170,000 and we would like to have a single family home instead of a townhouse, condo or apartment. Is this feasible? What features should we look for in a LV house?

You have your work cut out for you if you have a move in 6-8 months and haven't already started your research on vegas.

Best advise I can give you besides what others have said (use the search function and read the forums about moving here), would be to come see for your self. You said you have family here, use them as a resource. If you can come for a vist and stay with your husbands aunt for a week or two, you can get some first hand experience on what life in vegas is like.

Your expectations seem a little too high for housing at the moment. I'm no realtor, but it seems that for under 200k you aren't going to find much in the way of single family homes in nice neighborhoods. You might need to set the bar a little lower and consider town homes, condos, or renting for a while (always a good idea when moving to a new state and there are usually plenty of houses for rent if apartments don'e suit you), once you are here and know the area better then you can make a better decision on houses and neighborhoods.

under 200 will put you in the northeast by nellis or the east section.... set your sights a bit higher (250k) and you will have much more to choose from

Areas to avoid;

Naked City (the residential area around the Stratosphere, if you can count the windows at the top of the Stratosphere tower with your naked eye, you're too close)
89119 zipcode close to UNLV (high narcotics activity and section 8 housing)
Eastern north of Desert Inn or possibly Sahara
The older portion of North Las Vegas (we locals call it Northtown)
The area around Sam's Town and Boulder Station near the short term rentals

You should be able to find something in your price range by Nellis AFB. If you can go $200K to $250K you should be fine.
