We are moving from NY to Vegas & have two boxers. My question may be silly but I am going to ask anyhow.... do I need to continue to treat my dogs for fleas? I do not have a vet lined up yet & they will be due for their meds soon. Is it true that there are not any fleas in the desert? Does anyone treat as a precaution? Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi, I`d say no!
In this dry climate your dogs are better off than in the damper NY climate toward getting fleas. If they don`t have too much contact with other dogs n`hairy animals, then I would`nt worry about it at all, and surely would`nt medicate them at all.

Generally they do not treat for fleas, ticks, or heartworm in Vegas unless your pet travels.

My wife is a vet and has recently seen several cases of heartworm in Vegas from pets who travel and that is more of a concern since it costs like $1,200+ to treat heartworm.

I haven't seen flea's since moving from Calif. However, watch out for those giant cockroaches that might try and hitch a ride on your dogs. (only in the summer)

There are no fleas in the desert, period!

And since heart worms are caused by mosquitoes, that is not a problem here either, though not 100% impossible I suppose. I was worried about them recently because of an abandoned pool next door. I called the vet and he said it hasn't been found here and I didn't need to do anything. Fortunately the pool problem has been taken care of. But don't worry about either heart worms or fleas.

You do have to watch for ticks, but I've never had one on my dogs even when hiking in the mountains either here, northern Nevada, or New Mexico where I'd expect them to be. My ex-wife lost a dog to a tick bite a long time ago though, and she thought he got it running around outside her house.

We don't use any chemicals on our dogs, but I think the same collars used for ticks are used for fleas also, so you do see flea collars in stores, and people probably use them for ticks. Of course the chain stores' buyers are probably somewhere else, and they send the stores here all kinds of stuff that is useless. You see bird feeder squirrel guards here too, and there's never been a squirrel in southern Nevada even in the mountains.

BTW: If your dogs bring fleas with them it won't start an epidemic, they'll just die of dehydration...the fleas, not the dogs.
