It is primarily a very hard water problem...which is true of the Colorado and some other places. Can actually happen anywhere though high mineral content enhances it.

There have been indication of some problems with other systems. The ideal here appears to be plastic or bronze fittings. There are brass fittings that don't have the problem...either low zinc or with added inhibitors to prevent dezincification.

I am not aware of any successful suits on other systems though I know some have been proposed.

The present systems of plastic pipe and fittings appear to be holding up...but it is still premature to say the problem is solved. Maybe in another ten years.

A deadline was published however on June 11, 2012, the Court ordered that unclaimed settlement funds from some subclasses be used to benefit other Kitec class members. The additional funds will benefit the homeowners who are required to pay for a portion of their re-plumbs.

There were several builders that were afforded the protection of bankruptcy (Woodside, Rhodes, Astoria) There were other builders that were added to the settlement late in the game.

The Court's order means that these homeowners are now entitled to $915.70 per home in additional funds for their re-plumbs. Depending on individual circumstances, this increase may result in some homeowners being able to accomplish re-plumbs at no cost to them.

The Court's order benefits homeowners in the following subclasses: Woodside Homes Subclasses A-B, Kimball Hill Homes Subclass A, Champion Homes Subclasses A-C, Vipor Homes Subclasses A-B, the Santa Fe Homes Subclass, and several other small groups of class homes
