I've been through Swampy. I liked the old airport at Don Meung better for convenience, but the new airport is definitely larger. The rail is handy for those who don't have much baggage to tow along. Fortunately, we have family meet us at the airport when we arrive, and take us back when we have to leave.

If you are wanting to fly Thai Airways then you can book the ticket all on the same ticket stock. United and US Airways are both partners with Thai (Star Alliance). They will fly you to and from LAX and then you will connect to Thai.

Bags will be interlined through on the outbound and you will clear customs on the return and then recheck (drop off) your bag for the connecting flight LAX-LAS.

At LAX you will have to do a terminal change and have to reclear security as United comes into Terminal 7/8 or US Airways comes into Terminal 1 and the Thai flight will leave from Tom Bradley Intl Terminal (TBIT). There will be no avoiding this but the security shouldn't been too bad for the late departing Thai Airways flight (around midnight).

Returning you will have to reclear security and switch terminals at LAX just as before.

If I were you I would fly the United flight to LAX and connect to the Thai flight becuase UA flies big planes and not regional jets as US does on this route.

The only negative I see is that the return flight from BKK to LAX arrives at like 940pm, which will be too late to connect to any flights coming home the same night. You can book a (up to) 24 hour connection on an international ticket so it won't be a problem taking the UA flight the next day. There are plenty of hotels right by the airport that you should be able to priceline for $40-60 per night.

Any other questions just ask - I travel 100K+ miles per year for work.

Just for kicks I put in a Vegas to Bangkok into KYACK travel to see what came up. The cheapest flights were on United Airlines with connections in San Francisco & Tokyo.

If I remember correctly the taxis were pretty reasonable at the Bangkok Airport, plus they drop you off in front of your hotel.

What was the price for United?

UA is not the way you want to travel over the Pacific though. God that flight to Hong Kong on the 747 is just awful. But they usually do have the best prices. But seriously if the price difference is only $100-200 more you might want to consider passing on United and taking Thai out of LAX to save you the time of being directed up to either HKG or Tokyo on an uncomfortable plane.

I've taken United and Delta from PDX to BKK a couple of times years ago. Neither one was great. As I recall, I think the Delta flight stopped at Taipei (end of the line back then), then it was an old, narrow, crammed, Thai Airways flight to BKK. LOL! United made a stop at Seoul Korea, and I think Taipei as well. I realize the routes from LAX are different though. Just saying.

Now we use Northwest, PDX to Narita to BKK. About an hour+ at the transit lounge at Narita. My wife just got back in October and is going again next month for a few months. R/T: $855. I might go over in May.
