Again there is certainly room for improvement. That is a long way from the worst.

It is simply not true, has never been true and will likely never be true. The schools of the SW US are relatively weak but in general CCSD is better than any of the big CA districts. It is also better than much of the rust belt and also NYC.

You should be careful offering opinions like this that you are unable to defend.

To say that one should be careful about schools in CCSD is a fair observation. But to simply dismiss it as "worst" is also hopelessly incorrect.
Fair enough. I will let her do hew own research. I have done plenty.

Capt would you happen to have a link or article handy stating where the NYC public school system is better than the CCDS . I would love to read up on that. Thanks

There is a learned paper somewhere or the other on the 20 largest school systems. NYC is actually pretty bad - a lot worse than CCSD. I will see if I can find it but it is not in my reference folder...damn.

Yeah I always remember hearing on the news (grew up in NJ) how bad the NYC public schools were. You would think with all those resources that would not be the case.

Biased opinion. If you like nice tract homes and neighborhoods with nice amenities, your search of places to live in Las Vegas should start with our much touted Master Planned Communities, Summerlin, Green Valley, Seven Hills/Anthem, Southern Highlands and Aliante. Finding homes in those neighborhoods with decent yard space comes at a premium, but all offer it in some shape and form.

See if you can't find a house for rent that allows pets or an apartment complex that allows them in one of the above mentioned areas after you have a chance to get a down and dirty tour of the cities burbs.

The area in and around the Fountains on East Flamingo isn't my favorite area of town for a lot of reasons, but thats mostly because its kind of far away from the areas I like to go to eat and shop. They are older apartments (20+ years old) but appear to be fairly well maintained. Crime is generally low in the area.

To the OP:

Try renting in the Centennial Hills area - you could get a house very reasonably. The schools are decent (the elementary school my daughter goes to, Sandra S. Thompson, is rated an 8 on GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community, and they're very nice communities to live in (quiet, basically "city-safe"). The Centennial YMCA is a very impressive complex and we have lots of parks and things to do.

Just west or just east of I-95 and Durango has a lot of options with some of the better schools in the district (with all due respect to Green Valley and Summerlin - they aren't the only good schools in the county). Yes, it's the extreme north for Las Vegas but it's not much of a commute compared to other cities I've lived in (my drive was 25 minutes from my house to my job at 215 & Russell).

Plus the Centennial Hills shopping center is right there nearby, and you're a short drive to a day trip up to Mount Charleston.

Good luck!

I would try to get your kids in charter schools instead of the public schools.

Here is an enlightening report on the subject:

While both supporters and opponents of increased public school funding have made their respective arguments based on test scores, the truth is that no comprehensive, national comparison of the proficiency of all students has ever been undertaken, let alone published. That said, national comparisons of subsets of students indicate that Nevada students fare no better than mid-range, and are most often well below students in other states when evaluating achievement based on standardized test performance.

While media attention has typically focused on identifying schools as "achieving" or "failing" in a particular year, the longer-term notion that all students must achieve proficiency by school year 2013-2014 raises the question of where is Nevada on the continuum toward this ideal vision. Since the Clark County School District comprises nearly three-fourths of state-wide enrollment, its annual targets and progress are highly relevant in answering this question.
