Being that I will be moving out to Vegas within the next 2 weeks and will be brand new to the area, are there any tips, tricks, or advice that a newbie local should be aware of?

thanks!

That's generally sound advice. However ...

Sign up for a player's card at as many casinos as you can. Even if you never gamble, you'll get offers for discounts on rooms, meals and sometimes shows. Naturally, the more you gamble, the more offers you'll get, but even if you never put a nickel in a machine, you'll get something.

Yes, Gold Coast gave me two nights for free last Christmas. I have been here for 15 years already, and I have never put a nickel in the machines. I have never signed up for their player's card also.

Forget the casinos. Never gamble. Use the free listing on craigslist--that's a helluva better gamble than the casinos. I moved here for the cars and the weather. And I'm happy for it.

"Don't drink the water."

Never mind.. the water's fine...

Be prepared for the summer. Expect three months of 100+ degree weather, and be thankful when it occasionally drops down to the 90s at night.

Expect your auto insurance to go up - regardless of where you're from. I came from Los Angeles - where insurance isn't cheap - and my rate went up about 30%. LV is a 24 hour city with booze flowing like grain through a goose. Insurance companies don't like that combination.

Don't leave valuables (including GPS, satellite radio, aftermarket stereo, etc) visible in your car. It's good advice no matter where you live, but it's especially good advice here.

Play lots of poker - especially if you're just learning!

Drink lots and lots of water, and buy lots of chapstick! There are plenty of nice restaurants off the Strip to explore. You'll quickly learn how annoying it can be trying to navigate around tourists on the Strip. I like the Strip, but usually am only there when I have family, friends, and my clients visiting.

Putting even a little money in a machine each month at a locals casino gets you MUCH better offers. Just put $5 or $10 in a machine, play for 2-3 minutes, then cash out if you have anything left and return next month. Otherwise you are just going to get occasional offers instead of a book of coupons and deals each month.

If someone starts bragging about things like "owning points" in a casino, or being able to get you into show biz, or even a great job ...run.

After you get here have your car windows tinted ...do it here where you'll get a better deal, and they know what is legal in Nevada.

Sell your three piece suits, overcoats, raincoats, and galoshes before you move. Don't transport them here for nothing. Same goes for tire chains, unless you ski.

Wear sunscreen ...although there is some evidence that it allows the bad rays through and stops only the good, vit-D producing, rays. Stay tuned.

Don't call it Nee vah da. It's Ne vaa da. Unless your primary language is Spanish, then you may correctly pronounce it Ne vah da, meaning Snow Covered in Español. Along those same lines, don't say Sierra Mountains. Sierra means mountains, so that would be like saying mountain mountain. We already have Circus Circus.

When you get here don't look around and proceed to tell everyone there's gambling going on. We already know that. It's no big deal. Neither is the fact that some of the 17 counties have legalized prostitution. BFD!

And when you see a star like Rita Rudner, or Terry Fator, in the grocery store after the last show don't act like an idiot. All they want to do is get home and go to bed. Especially don't go all ga ga over the showgirl that lives next door. She doesn't need your attention.

When you ballet park, take your house key with you just to be safe. Sh*t happens.

When it rains the roads are slick from ten years worth of spilled oil that never sees enough rain to wash it away. And don't drive through a flash food.

If you want a fishing partner, and you're fun to be around but wouldn't make fun of me for not catching anything, call me.
