I have both passport and green card. As many people say the green card should be enough to get into the Canada and back through land. In that case I could leave my passport safe at home in the U.S.

Also my passport is from a country that has visa waiver program agreement with Canada, so that I could theoretically just show only the passport to Canadians.

Who can give me an advice?

Green card alone is fine.

From what i understand you do need a passport to re-enter the USA.
My advice if you have a passport then bring it along with your green card.
Isnt going from country to country the whole reason behind a passport..

"U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents may use their I-551 ("Green Card") -- instead of a passport -- for travel between Canada and the United States, by air, land, or sea. The I-551 is accepted for entry to Canada, from the U.S.; a U.S. permanent resident does not require a visa to visit Canada, regardless of citizenship. When re-entering the U.S., permanent residents must present their I-551."

If you had an option to enter Canada just on passport or just on green card, what is better?

Green card because it proves your US immigration status when you come back into the country which a passport doesn't. I think the ruling I quoted demonstrates that in the last sentence, viz, "When re-entering the U.S., permanent residents must (emphasis mine) present their I-551."

When I came through Canada last fall they asked for both my greencard and my passport. Best to be prepared and take both.

Personal preference ("I could leave my passport safe at home") and the bottom line is simply that you don't HAVE to carry it to go between the US and Canada.

Crossing both ways on the US/Canada border hundreds of times i'd want a passport to enter the USA, While a valid green card will get you through those border guards can be very anal if they think you are trying to be cute by offering other id than a passport when knowing full well that a passport is their preferred means of id, i'm sure by not having a passport you are leaving open the possibility for extra scrutiny from the border guards..
I dont get why you would go to the trouble and expense of acquiring a passport only to leave it safely at home when traveling.
