One other thing for your attorney to look for, bird1103--check to see if you really were subject to the 2-year residency requirement. They sometimes mark that you are subject when you really weren't. If it turns out you actually weren't subject, the problem goes away if you can convince the government of that.
One thing you can do quite easily is contact one of the United States Senators from your state and let them know about your situation. They have staff people who can help navigate through the federal bureaucracy quite easily and help you resolve your situation.
