I'm US-born and have wanted to live in Canada all my adult life. Canadian immigration policy is one of the most strict in the world, and they make it very, very clear that they don't want to see Americans coming there to steal their jobs. Canadians look out for their own, and have a very unified attitude about that. Most do not like Americans no matter what. Yet I still love it there, although the possibility of immigrating there is pretty much dead.
So now, all these people will get legal status here, while US-born citizens cannot leave because of the restricive nature of other western countries' immigration policies, particularly towards Americans.

I feel the same way. I have family in Canada (cousins, aunts all Canadian born) and my grandfather was actually born in Canada. I have been looking into immigrating there but the process is so crazy.
If I had jumped through all the necessary hoops to become a citizen, it would make me angry to see others who were here illegally be given amnesty. It makes me angry as a natural born citizen. Do you think it's fair?
Very unfair. We came her legally and know many families like us who have E2 kids who have no path to a green card and no SSN after being here for almost 15 year. One may have a path throug a family member in like ten years from now when he will approx. 30 and the other one will have to marry a US citizen to be able to stay or leave when he turns 21 and say bye to his parents who own a business here for 15 years and had no clue when they came here that the age of 21 would be such an issue.
Want to stop the flow of illegal immigrants? Enact severe penalties for those employing them. I'd suggest fines of $10,000 per employee for a first offense, $50,000 per for a second offense, and prison for a third. I think we'd see a quick turnaround.
However, they need to suck it up. Congress needs to fix immigration. They have failed to do so.
How does granting an amnesty fix immigration? How does rewarding illegals fix immigration? My wife is an immigrant and she is angry about this free pass. We have to wait 7 to 10 years for my wife's daughter to get her VISA. Unlike all illegals, my wife's daughter, has never violated a law in this country. Unlike most illegals my step daughter speaks fluent English and has 2 college degrees. Yet she has to wait. Mean while Obama has decided that 4.5 million + illegals need to be catered to. What is wrong with that picture?
Let's face it: undocumented workers, unauthorized residents, et al., are codewords for "Latinos", people mostly from Mexico, and some from Central America, who make up 90%+ of illegal immigrants. We are not talking about wave after wave of Europeans or Asians, or even Canadians for that matter. European and Asian countries are a long way off across oceans-it's hard and expensive for them to get here. Obama and the Democrats see a future political base amongst the newly amnestied Latin citizenry. I doubt if we'd see any talk of "amnesty" if millions of people from Near East, Arab, Muslim countries were invading our shores.
It doesn't bother me. It's a reality that our economy depends on these workers.
Let's kick them out and eliminate the welfare and SNAP fraud. Maybe once those folks don't have any more government handouts, they'll realize that work is a part of life for most people.

In the UK it is 10,000 pounds per employee. So $15,000 would be more appropriate for a first offense.
