Hello folks, sorry if this topic was already covered.
I know a young man who needs to get a replacement green card, and from what I can see it costs $540 and takes 6 to 8 months!
Why so much cost just to replace a lost card, and why so long?
(I know, probably "good questions" with no good answer.)
I see a query about replacing a green card "free," yet at the end it talks about "pay and submit," thus:
To apply to replace (or renew) your Green Card online, you should:
Create a USCIS account. This will allow you to access the online application.
Complete the online Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card (I-90). ...
Upload evidence. ...
Review and sign. ...
Pay and submit.
Does anyone know about this fee? Is it less than the regular fee of $540?
Thx
6-8 months and counting...just saying. I know someone where USCIS messed up the date on his green card and his lawyer advised him to apply for replacement card which was free of fee charge due to the error being at USCIS which was very easy for USCIS to determine.
Lawyer told him it would more likely 9 months. But after 10 or 11 months waiting and contacting USCIS numerous times, having to go to USCIS for getting passport stamped due to date issue and needing a new drivers license, the Lawyer advised to contact Ombudsman or local Congressmen.
Within 2 weeks of contacting Ombudsman is when replacement card came in, which ended up to be close to one year after the application for replacement card was filed.
The main reason for the expense is that they want to motivate you to take better care of it, instead of letting it fall into the wrong hands.
As for the rest of the drivel about illegal immigrants getting drivers licenses handed to them, no state is doing that and nobody is advocating for it. Can they apply and pay like everyone else to get drivers licenses so that they can also get insurance in some states? Sure. But they’re not handing them out on the corner like candy. Some of you need to stop watching so much Fox News.
NY does, so do 12 others. NJ is wanting to give illegals drivers licenses. I'm highly against it. My parents came the legal way.
A day after New York became the 13th state to allow undocumented immigrants to apply for driver's licenses, New Jersey's advocates on Tuesday renewed calls for the Garden State to be next.
After a Green Card is Granted
A Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) is issued to all permanent residents as proof that they are authorized to live and work in the United States. If you are a permanent resident age 18 or older, you are required to have a valid Green Card in your possession at all times.
This page gives you a brief summary of the top actions a permanent resident may need to do after receiving a Green Card.

There’s your cite... you must have your green card on you at m times
That's a different cite, but it shows that the other cite does not exist.
I actually had someone ask me yesterday if the picture of it on their phone was enough. I answered "no" because I still don't believe the earlier claim that it is good enough. The poster who claimed it, didn't provide a cite.
The poster who claimed it had the Green Card in a safe deposit box for 30 years.
It’s not. You’re supposed to carry the actual card with you. If you (generic you) can’t be responsible with something as important as a green card, maybe you shouldn’t have one.
The poster who claimed it had the Green Card in a safe deposit box for 30 years.
I believe that. Just because it's required doesn't mean you can't get away with it. The cellphone pic, though, isn't the same as having the card on you.
As I said, they are allowed to apply and pay for them. They are not ‘handing them out’, which would imply that they are free and do not require any demonstration of driving ability.
I came the legal way too, because I was lucky enough to have the opportunity and means to do so. Does that mean I’d rather get hit by an undocumented immigrant that doesn’t have insurance vs one that does? Absolutely not. A lack of license won’t keep them off the road. But it will keep them from getting insurance.
The Director of USCIS should stay of the TV and work on improvements. He is almost daily on TV for items that do not fall under USCIS but ICE!
