So I am thinking about becoming a US citizen. I have been in this country for over 55 years legally. I have a green card and have been married to a US citizen for almost 40 years.I also served in the US Air Force for 4 years and have worked at the same company for 40 years.

My question is there a way to do this at no cost to me? Last time I checked it was going to be very expensive to do this.

Welcome to the “ club”!
2 points besides the money you need to spend- no exceptions- on your application for citizenship.
1) Depending on the size of your marital assets- the non- citizen spouse suppose to pay tax to US on your inheritance if your spouse dies first.
If you are a citizen- you don’t have to- your heirs will- again, depending on the size of your estate.
You should look into it- unless the law changed.

2) if you later decide to return to your home country after becoming a US citizen- then you still must pay tax to the US, on your worldwide income, even if you are not producing income from the US.
That how US citizenship works.
That is why some Americans like Tina Turner, Madonna and others renounced their US citizenship- expensive as well to do that, probably more expensive then to become a citizen.
Basically, it depends on your financial situation...
Talk to an accountant, especially if you are wealthy.
What is your spouse’s opinion?

Sadly not wealthy. I don't plan on going back to Canada as grandkids are here. Becoming a citizen would let me vote and not much else i think.

Do you have to renounce your Canadian citizenship? If yes, would future health care needs factor into your decision?

What made you think that voting now after so many years is important this time?

Please do not think I criticize your thoughts/action but just wonder and I’m interested to hear.

I have seen a lot of people who believe voting is very important now due to the left wing going nuts but maybe some just want to become a citizen to make the US like Europe and Canada.

I was just in Europe and I can say that even though we had a great time, we are glad to be back.

It's only $750. If that is too expensive for you, then it's probably not worth it just for the right to vote.

Biggest reason to become a citizen aside from being able to vote is if you are at risk of losing your green card status - if you’re planning on committing any ‘crimes of moral turpitude’, or any other such legal situation that could have them coming for you. Your marriage to a US citizen and time in the Air Force will not stop that from happening if you do get into such a situation. But if you’re not interested in voting and don’t have any wealth issues, then maybe it’s not worth the expense.
