They are opening a new charter school in the Lehigh Valley next school year. It is called Circle of Seasons. You may want to look into it, although some may find the teaching method they use, a bit out there.

We know several of the founding members of 7Gen and while we feel very highly about the school (and hope to send our daughter there in a couple of years), I'm afraid the current political environment is not charter-school friendly. I have it on fairly good authority that when 7Gen's charter is up for renewal, it may not continue. Not because of any flaws in the school, but because with school budgets getting cut, people are feeling embittered about charter schools' taking resources from the district. That general attitude is why you don't see more charter schools in the LV, I believe.

You know, I was actually thinking about that very thing with the budget cuts.

I guess we will see what becomes of Seven Generations sometime in the near future.

I think Charter school don't do well outside of the city's because the regular public's are fairly successful (so there's not a hue and cry for them) and in the city's the public's are in budget crisis. It really does hurt them when families opt out and take money. I'm not saying that I don't think Charter schools are bad, but I don't think they are the answer to everything and not always necessary. My daughter taught at a Charter school in Harlem a year ago and it was not one of the good ones.

Count yourself lucky.
As far as I know, there is exactly one charter school for all of Luzerne county (Wilkes Barre and Hazleton) and it is only K-6.

Personally, I don't think well funded, good performing districts should even have charter schools. They should only be opened where a district is distressed and they need an alternative. Although that's an entirely different debate.

I tend to agree.

I am in favor of charter schools when they fill a void in the public education. As a parent in the East Penn SD, you would be hard pressed to show me what void 7 Gen is filling - aside from a full day kindergarten option.
