Hi friends, I am writing on behalf of my single 25 yr old son who is a finalist for a position as an Engineer working out towards Fogelsville (near Allentown). He is a wonderful guy, a bit introverted, so Mom here is thinking he would enjoy living in the Strata Flats near Hamilton District vs. a more suburban apartment close to his work. This Strata complex is right next to the PPL Center and apparently they rent to a lot of hockey players and other professionals. Seems to have good reviews and appears to be more vibrant than other options. Am I missing anything? Is it safe? Would love thoughts from locals that know the area.

His commute to work will suck driving through Allentown. He'd probably be better off getting an apartment near Breinigsville, try the Parkland View Apartments.

Thanks, that one is on the list. By suck, might it be more than 30 minutes? Coming from Chicago where a typical commute is 80 minutes each way, a 30 minute commute is a breeze.

Air Products? I'm a Mom too with kids of similar ages. My suggestion would be Emmaus. Small town but it's got a couple of brew pubs and a growing young adult population. Great farmers market and the commute to Fogelsville would be a breeze. Downtown Allentown, right where you are talking about, might be good too but there are still some not so great areas very close. I don't think the commute would be all that horrible, especially going West. A bad commute would be East of Allentown. We do have suburbs here, ie an area that is just houses with some strip malls, but there are also many small towns, like Emmaus that I think he could find some new friends. My youngest moved across country by himself and made friends through meet up groups.

The LV has some crazy commute times, but I generally find that Google Maps (when you put in the time of day or just look at it live at say 8AM on any workday aside from Friday) is pretty accurate. Generally going west from Allentown shouldn't be bad, but Google Maps will know.

Probably less than 30 minutes. The traffic in downtown Allentown actually isn't that bad, it just can take some time to get through the traffic lights. If he takes Route 22 to work, westbound will be fine where he gets on the morning, but eastbound sometimes backs up between Route 309 and 7th street where he would likely get off the highway. Evening commute home will take longer most of the time.

A few years ago I worked with a lot of engineers out in the Fogelsville area, the older ones tended to live in Lower Macungie/Upper Macungie or eastern Berks county, the ones in their 20s either lived nearby in apartments/townhouses in the immediate area or commuted from the Bethlehem area.

I mean, in the Lehigh Valley we often joke that you can get anywhere in about 30 minutes ... but the traffic in downtown Allentown is just annoying. Not unbearable or anything.

Please don't take this the wrong way but shouldn't a 25 year old man decide where he wants to live?
