Hello everyone. I am originally from Allentown. Lived there almost 30 years. Moved away (Texas) 2 years ago. Considering a move back but am a bit concerned about the recent crime and violence that is being reported on MCall.com and WFMZ. Is it just the way the news tends to play up these problems or is there a real sense that it is not very safe anymore?

Do you feel scared everytime you go out? Any sincere and honest input is appreciated.

Thank you.

My brother-in-law just bought a house a few years back around 11th and Liberty. He does admit that there has been some trouble in the neighborhood but for the most part doesn't feel threatened at all. I've never felt unsafe traveling anywhere in Allentown night or day.

What Wfmz and the other media doesn't tell you about is the crime and things that go on in the west end, God forbid that there is any trouble in South Whitehall. (Having been from Allentown you probably know what I mean)

In the last couple of years theirs been a big influx of Latino so alot of the neighborhoods especially east and south of 10th and Tilghman is changing but not necessarily for the bad.
Hope this helps some.

I have mixed views on Allentown. My best friend recently moved to 14th and Linden. I visit all the time and generally feel safe during the day, but there is no way I'd want to live there. However, my friend is enjoying the house and the neighborhood and is very happy there, so maybe you need to take me with a grain of salt

I do know that most of the crimes seem to be drug and/or gang-related and not simply random acts of violence.

I still mourn the "old" Allentown - the one where my relatives took me to Leh's and Hess's. Even when I played in Allentown Symphony in my teens/early twenties, I felt very safe down there at night. My fellow musicians and I would walk around and never had a problem.

I appreciate your comments. I have family there and am looking forward to moving back.

Karen I remember the old Allentow too. When Dorney was free all you paid for each ride with ticket books. I remember the Canopies on Hamilton Street and so many other great things.

Allentown downtown toward the northside of town has had a large infux from the big cities Philly and NYC. So there is an element that well has some issues with right and wrong. Guns and drugs do that. Now areas outside of those areas, Easton also has the same issues are fine.

That is incorrect. I believe the murder total for 2007 is up to 15 or 16 right now.

A majority of murders are drug related. If you mind your own business and chose your friends wisely you will be fine.
