Hello!

My husband is seriously considering a position at UK. We would be relocating after the school year ends, as we have three children (9,5, 10 months). We are looking at some neighborhoods close to downtown. Particularly Ashland Park or Aylesford/Woodland Park. We love historic neighborhoods with old homes. We're looking for an area that is full of life, restaurants and shops are within walking distance and is family-friendly with decent schools. Do either of these areas seem like a good fit? If not, any suggestions? We will be purchasing a home and our budget is around $650,000.

Thanks in advance!

You've just described Chevy Chase, which is adjacent to Ashland Park. Good schools, churches, two neighborhood shopping centers (with lots of good restaurants), and the long-established Woodland Park with a large pool, tennis courts, playgrounds, skate park, etc. plus a popular annual arts fair and other activities are all in easy walking distance of most of Chevy Chase. UK is about a mile away, easy biking distance and not impossible to walk, while downtown is about two miles away.

Aylesford/Woodland Park is also convenient (and Woodland Park itself is well within walking distance of much of Ashland Park and Chevy Chase), but these areas include a lot of rentals which cater to UK students.

Ashland Park houses tend to be larger than Chevy Chase houses, and are more expensive in most cases. But many Chevy Chase houses have been renovated and enlarged and could comfortably accommodate a family of five. Both neighborhoods include lots of mature trees, and while the houses are older, they are very solidly built, architecturally diverse (though almost all are traditional styles), and generally very well maintained. Chevy Chase is understandably popular with families.

Thank-you for your input! We're heading down later this month and we'll definitely put Chevy Chase on our must-see list.

We lived in Ashland Park for 10 years and loved it. You will get more house than in Chevy Chase and with your budget you will be able to find something nice. Our favorite things were being able to walk to so many things and the large grass medians for the kids.
You can't go wrong in either area and its a good school district.

While Chevy Chase and Ashland Park are within walking distance to the retail/dining on Romany Road and Tates Creek/Euclid area, you should also check out Bell Court. Bell Court is also within walking distance to those areas, but it is closer to downtown.

Aylesford/Woodland Park area will have some UK students renting around you. Don't know if you want that.

Schools zone is better in Ashalnd Park/Chevy Chase area unless you are considering private schools

Agreed!!! Ashland and Chevy Chase are not in my price range at this point in my life, but I enjoy just driving through those neighborhoods and looking at the beautiful homes and tall trees. It is my dream to live in such a beautiful part of Lexington. Actually, there is a house for rent now on the corner of Ashland that I joking refer to as "my house" because it's so beautiful! Maybe you could rent and then see what you think before buying! Woodland park is close to that area, but also to students and on that line between the residential and rental ares. Yet it is a really nice park with a pool and skate park, making an interesting mix of people, which is something I love. Very safe neighborhoods, family oriented. Best of luck! PS Welcome to UK!

For those looking for a neighborhood with many of Chevy Chase/Ashland Park's amenities, but with considerably lower price tags, check out Southland/Twin Oaks. Houses are more modest, but very well-kept, schools are good, churches - lots of churches - are nearby, as are shopping, restaurants, and at least two public parks: one large, with a pool, baseball and tennis courts, etc., one small but with playground equipment and a neighborhood garden. Lots are generously sized, with mature trees. Housing stock dates back to the 1950s+, and many if not most houses have hardwood floors, wood-burning fireplaces, separate garages and other amenities.

This friendly area is popular with both young families and older people, and is also convenient to UK, Beaumont and Fayette Mall, along with the variety of shopping available along Nicholasville Road. Side streets are quiet and safe.
