How livable a city is Lexington? How are the neighborhoods? What are the best places for young families? I am looking for safe and friendly. We have 3 kids 8 and under. We are homeschoolers currently but will consider other options, too.

OR.... Would we be better off living outside of Lexington in Georgetown, Versailles or one of the other communities?

I am also hoping for some diversity because we are a bilingual family (English & Spanish) and would really consider small-town life if we would be welcomed. If we do the city, we would like a neighborhood with a strong community feel.

I will probably be pursuing doctoral work at UK and my husband will be working for a hospital.

I have been hanging around the Kentucky forum (and many others) for months, but the more research I do the more I like the idea of Lexington...

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Default Attn: Lexingtonites (Lexingtoners?) (Lexingtonians?)

I am just bumping this to the top because I am hoping for some feedback on how liveable Lexington is as a city. Thanks for any advice!

Lexington is essentially an overgrown college town. Without the college, there is not much there. Overall it is a very nice town and there are few if any "bad "areas." The schools are good, traffic is light (although they have little if any freeway system which can be a hassle), and crime is low. Most of the city is very suburban looking and is very safe.

I have already given you my opinion on Louisville, but being 4 times larger than Lexington with many more amenities, I am not sure there is much comparison.

Thanks! I know that Louisville is a really cool city--I just think that we are looking for quieter right now. But until we make another visit to KY nothing is final.
