Hi everyone,

We're a retired military couple considering a move to Hot Springs. Our biggest concerns are healthcare and the ability to get a rental.

Can anyone share any information about getting military healthcare in this area? I've seen that Hot Springs has a VA clinic, but it's not a hospital. And the wife needs to use Tricare. So if you need to be hospitalized, where are you ending up. The VA hospital in Jackson, MS?

How's the rental situation in Hot Springs?

Oh, and the casino? Any good? Am I correct there's another casino in Pine Bluff?

Don't care about the politics, but how's the crime situation in this area?

Thanks in advance for any information that you can share.

I think you will get a lot better response if you post this directly on AR thread and not Little Rock/Conway. Most of those who know HS and HSV will be reading the AR section more than Little Rock as Little Rock is not really near Hot springs area.

Good luck, I am sure you will get your answers and I am sure you will want to research the area because it should have everything you are wanting. Oh and btw: Pine Bluff is no where near Hot Springs either. They do have a neat casino at the race track. Or, a lot of people venture over the OK line for their casino fun.

While I can’t address the VA medical situation, I have used other medical in the hot springs area and it is very good. (Everything from ambulance/emergency room to eye care, satisfied with it all) There is a VA hospital in Little Rock, which is about 45 mins by car, 30 mins by ambulance and about 15 by air ambulance.

Lots of retirees in the hot springs area, therefore, lots of medical.

Also, lots and lots of rentals in the hot springs area, because it is a vacation destination. Condos are available for nightly, weekly, monthly and 6-12 month leases all over lake Hamilton. I went downtown this afternoon and it was very busy.

The casino and race track are in the process of a large ( $100 m+) expansion and renovation. This should be completed sometime this year. (Looked closer today, than I expected) I don’t do the casino, I am race track only, but all my guests and friends seem very pleased with it. Google: Oaklawn Racetrack and Casino

I have had a lake condo in hot springs for several decades and never experienced an issue with crime. We regularly go to Kroger and Walmart at night without any issues. We also eat out a lot, so that takes us all over town after dark, never had an issue there either. I, honestly don’t know anyone who has been a crime victim in hot springs. While we don’t live here full time, we have spent thousands of nights/weekends here for decades. ( we did recently sold a property in another Arkansas city, because we were not comfortable with the rising crime)

While I don’t know much about hot springs village, you might want to explore that development also. Lots of retirees out there. ( about 15-20 mins outside hot springs proper and gated, super safe, in my opinion)

Default Hot Springs Village

There is a significant difference in crime between Hot Springs and Hot Springs Village (The Village - a gated community - has a much lower crime rate and far fewer registered sex offenders).

Hot Springs has it's share of crime, but like most places it's confined to certain areas. The crime in Hot Springs doesn't even compare to Little Rock or Pine Bluff.

Thanks in advance for any information that you can share.

There are two hospitals in Hot Springs, many Doctors and clinics, and a VA Clinic.

Hot Springs is a resort town, lots of rentals but they can be more pricey than you might expect.

The Casino is at Oaklawn, the horse track. The Casino was recently renovated and expanded. The race track has a new hotel and convention under construction, should be complete very soon.

Pine Bluff's casino opened recently. I have zero desire to go over there due to the crime in Pine Bluff.

Like someone said above, check out Hot Springs Village. Plenty of rentals and it caters to retirees.

There is another retirement community in the area, Diamondhead. I've been there but don't know a lot about it. It's too remote for us.

I concur with your suggestion to cross-post in the Arkansas thread, but I think most people would consider 60 miles as being "close" to Little Rock.

I'm not sure how this hasn't already been addressed, but there are TWO VA Hospitals in Central Arkansas, one is Fort Roots in North Little Rock and the other is the main VA Hospital in Little Rock, which is one of the largest VA hospitals in the country. Both are about 60 miles from Hot Springs (and about 45 miles from Hot Springs Village).
