An option I'm considering when relocating out of FL is seeking employment at the U of Arkansas Medical Center (UAMS). The cost of living in Little Rock is attractive, and so is living near UAMS and living minus a car. Walkability to/from work and a quality grocery store, restaurants, etc is a necessity as is some level of safety. Is living carless doable and is bus transit somewhat prevalent? If so recommendations for apts or specific areas?

I wouldn't live there without a car.
There is a small section of town between UAMS and a retail area along Kavanaugh, but otherwise walkablity is very hit-and-miss.
They have busses, but it's one of those places I wouldn't ride the bus. Safety is one issue the other is frequency.
There are some pretty rough areas of the city.

Otherwise it can be a neat place, but just don't expect it to be something it's not.

I agree that living in Central Arkansas without a car is not overly practical, but I would disagree about safety being an issue with Rock Region Metro (bus and a small bit of rail downtown). In fact, their app lets you track every bus and trolley with accuracy, though it isn't super frequent.

The area around (north of) UAMS is VERY walkable and a desirable part of the city; it's called "Hillcrest". Grocery, dining, retail and parks/trails are all within walking distance in the neighborhood, and all walkable to UAMS.

Here are some resources on the neighborhood:

Good luck with your potential move!
