I've known London since the 60s - native Londoner - still get back a couple of times a year ... a plethora of great historic architecture and some f*** off high rises? The city's never looked better. What the rabid conservationists often fail to grasp is that historic structures are often highlighted ... complemented by the new.
Layering is the thing.

The areas being built on, are in the East End where the old disused docks used to be, such as Canary Wharf as well as Greenwich Peninsula, even the city 'the Financial District is to the East.
In terms of tourists as far east as they usually go is a trip to Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, and they mainly stay in the West End.
The West End is what most Americans think of when they think of London and not the areas such as docklands.

It shouldn't be just a nice looking place to satisfy tourists though. what made London, was that it was a city where everybody could find a niche no matter how bizarre. London lead the world in street fashion. It has changed. Not all for the better. Not just about buildings, but people.
There's plenty of 'old' London remaining. 'Don't recognise' either suggests not having been there of late, or absurd hyperbole.
I know London very well. In places, I barely recognise it. Not hyperbole, simply fact. Don't go there as much for that reason. Simply not as good or interesting on a street level as was. Minus the sanitisation in parts, of course.

Apart from CW and the City (still obviously recognisable) - where 'in places' do you barely recognise?
