I don't want to ask a Verizon rep because I've dealt with them and know the answer I'll get (i.e. they want to upsell you to FIOS).

When you go to the Verizon website, you can see all the internet connection options, and I would be perfectly happy with the 1.5, 3 or 5 mbps speed options they show with DSL. But when you enter your phone # and address to see what service is available in your area, you get "Good news! FIOS is available in your area!" and they don't show you the option for DSL. I don't want to have the lawn torn up or whatever else they do to install the equipment for FIOS and I don't want to pay the higher price for FIOS. I would be happy if they just sent me a DSL modem.

Anyone have experience with Verizon where they can still order DSL?

I have heard nothing but bad stories about Verizon's DSL service. Do some research before you decide on anything.

I figure I'm choosing the lesser of three evils. I loathe Verizon, plenty of bad experiences with my business phone account. But I read reviews online at CNet and Optimum Online seems just as bad. I currently have Earthlink Dialup (!) at home which I don't use anymore because its too slow. I looked into Earthlink's DSL service and it gets bad reviews also. What else is available?

FIOS seems to get good reviews but its too much hassle with the installation. I'm staying at my mom's house because I'm caretaker for her (invalid) and I don't want to do anything that might mess up her phone service or cable TV.

I have had optimum online since it came out and for the most part it has been great. I suppose it depends on the area but that is my experience with it. The cable service, now that is a completely different story.

I am posting via Verizon DSL. It goes over the copper (not fibre) line - requires all your telephone devices to have filters plugged into the line.

But its cheap...

I had Verizon DSL up until this past November. I had it for about 7 years. I switched from Optimum Online to it b/c of the billing and Cablevision had screwed me over while renting. Although it is slower than Optimum Online, it's not terrible. Definitley faster than dial up. You will have to have filters on each of your phones though (Verizon provides these for you). We now have FIOS and it's great. FIOS is definitely faster than DSL and Optimum but if you didn't want to get FIOS, I would go with DSL.
