Unfortunately what I have personally encountered is that "old timers" or anyone who lived there before you did often have no regard for newer incoming neighbors. Sort of "I was here first" mentality. I feel that may be the issue here but who knows? There are always two sides to every story.
I do think it probably got started off on the wrong foot asking them to not get water on the fence that faces them. So now they won't accomodate the OP in any way.
This is sort of what I alluded to when I wrote of toes being stepped on.

OP can erect a fence, no problem with that, but to come along and try and tell someone not to get the fence wet while watering? That's a bit much but doesn't warrant having their patio watered in the process. That's rude.

You're right, there are two sides and we are only hearing one. I wish we could hear the other side.

Yes there is an "I was here first" mentality that permeates many a Long Island Neighborhood. There are self appointed "block captains" - hmmm.... did I purchase a co-op or a house??? Who discusses the neighborhood with their followers - this IS like a cult guys - what should be done to YOUR property.

A few years ago the stockade fence that separates my home from 25A was falling down. A "Friendly Neighbor" (sic) suggested that we repair it. We responded that we were thinking of putting up a PVC fence in the spring but for right now we had no plans. Our yard was and is enclosed. The fence mainly benefits our across the street neighbors who are spared the ultimate horror of seeing 25A from their home. For us it was a non issue. for the wel that is why their house was less expensive and if they REQALLY thought 25A was over run with pedophiles - why by a house near it?
Several weeks later my children were home from school with colds. They exclaimed "Mom there is a man on our property putting nails in our fence!" And so there was.
The very same block captain guy.
He claimed that he was "being neighborly" and "trying to help"
We neither needed nor wanted his help. He was not hired by us and he had no insurance - what if he fell on our property?
Also if he really WAS being neighborly - has he ever heard of a door bell?? We have one and his guess was correct - the answer would have been NNNOOOOOOO!
These people sued about 15 businesses to buy their house. All public record.
So like I am going to let Mr Litigious work on MY YARD???

For the Op, I agree that the sprinkler going over the fence is inconsiderate if it happens all the time. The other part about not watering the fence is unresonable and unrealistic. Fences and other outdoor structures are naturally exposed to the weather and should be manufactured to withstand that.

Your neighbor sounds like a budinsky.

It was wrong of the man to trespass onto the property to repair the fence which you had no intention of repairing.

In all fairness, a fence in disrepair -- falling down -- is an eyesore. Could the section have been removed pending replacement with new? Personally, I would sooner look at 25A as opposed to a broken fence.

Did you sell recently? I am trying to recall if you were one of the people relocating out of state, or if I am confusing you with someone on the VT board who used to be a LIer. If it was you who sold, heaven help the new resident having to deal with Mr. Budinsky!

We were warned by the sellers of all people, about the Fence Guy and about the people next door whose home will never ever sell for the crazy asking price.
Their taste would lend one to thunk that they are older than my parents. The house is carpeted within an inch of it's life. The cabinets are Formica. And all of the furniture is pushed up against the wall....ugggh.....
NICE.
Yes alas we are leaving Three Village - but we have loved our seven years here - save the 2 bad neighbors - we will ALL miss Stony Brook and the Setaukets as well as Port Jefferson Village - which we adore!

I can not extol the virtues of Fence Guy enough! Really, he CAN come in handy! For example on a hot day when hr most likes to mow the lawn, hr can be seen donning a wife beater style undershirt. Just when you are ready to say 'ewwwww' and escort your frirnds into the back yard comes Act Two where he whips off the white grimy thing and ties a red bandanna over his head. Your teen aged daughters will say 'gross' your sons will snicker and your husband will shake his head and utter the unimaginable.

At Christmas time you can watch the entire family observe a hoilday called Mallsmith - the tree and decorations go up the day after Thanksgiving - then the whole shebang is tossed to the curb on December 26 when the house is professionally cleaned.

A very fun guy! We willl umm no. we won't be missing him but at least he didn't sue his way into YOUR CUL DE SAC!

I will miss the area - the schools the library - but I paid this much for a house to watch a guy prance around his lawn sans shirt?

OMG! What rock did this man crawl out from under??? Your description made me shudder and cringe!

It amazes me that this man sued his way in. Without giving particulars, is there a reason he did this or is he just a conniver?

This is sooo off topic but I suspect that he and is wife come from around Exit 68 of the LIE.
They bought the house at foreclosure for 200 something - all public record. They have a huge extended family with big family get togethers almost every weekend - some relative is always pregnant so there's a big painted plywood stork semi permanently on their front lawn.
Kind of makes you feel as though you live across the street from a low rent catering hall.
They are nasty control freaks as are the people next door.
The rest of the neighbors ignore each other - which is kind of how I like it!
But I will miss The Three Village Area despite these aberrations.

I apologize to the OP and mods for the OT on the SB Fence Guy/budinsky, but want to thank sheena12 for the insight into what she dealt with re: fence and neighbors.
