I have heard that Veterans get a tax break on property taxes. Has anyone heard of this? I wonder how much of a break one would receive.....

Yes, it's true. I believe the amount you receive depends on how you served - ie if you were never deployed then you get a lot less than someone who has a Purple Heart. My FIL has a bunch of medals including PH and I think he gets a fairly substantial reduction, my BIL was in the Marines but never was deployed and I think his break is fairly miniscule. I'm not 100% sure though.

You might want to ask the county clerk of the county where your property is located.

Some, but not all, of the taxing districts in which your property is located reduce the assessed value for calculating the annual property tax for veterans.

Veterans of different eras may receive different reductions in the assessed value for those taxing districts that do give veterans a reduction in their property's assessed value.

Veterans tax break is 10% off town taxes

15% if you were deployed to a combat zone.

"off town taxes" is the operative word here! We all know that over 60% of our taxes are school taxes--the veteran's exemption does NOT reduce school taxes beyond STAR. But hey, every little bit helps!
