I noticed the other day my neighbor had trimmed his tree in a rather odd place. Upon closer inspection I see he has installed one of those security cameras in the tree. This alone would not be so strange, but it is not pointed at his home or the street in front of it. It appears to be pointed at a house across the street and a few doors down.

Not sure any laws are being broken, since the front of the house is in public view, but it still creeps me out.

I plan to mention it to this neighbor being watched, but I am not sure any laws are being broken. Any one else have any experience with this kind of "peeping Tom" neighbor?

I cannot comment on local laws, but typically ... filming things in public is fine, as long as there is no expectation of privacy.

... your neighbor cannot expect privacy while working in their yard, for example.

Can you think of any reason that neighbor A would want to spy on neighbor B?

I have no idea why any one would be so interested in this neighbor, nice quiet senior couple.

The neighbor with the camera is a bit a sleazy, anti social, secretive character.

My neighbor used to videotape the street in front of his house after his 4x4 got stolen. He was able to give me a detailed report of what my cat did every morning.

Don't you love technology...

Are you sure it's pointed at that house, or is the angle just a good one for observing his yard or whatever?

While its always possible that it could be pointed at the neighbor's house, I think a more likely scenario is that its pointed at something else. Perhaps something on that side of his yard, or near his car if he parks in the street.

With so many burglaries these days, maybe it is pointed at the street to watch coming and goings of vehicles if something happens. I don't think a camera pointed straight down makes sense...and to limit the view to only a certain vantage point on his property may not yield info for police, it makes sense to watch the street... Maybe it just appears to point to a neighbors home...

if for some reason it is pointed at the neighbors house, could the neighbor do some plantings to give them more privacy-

With the relatively cheap price of these type of cameras and the ease of installation, I think you will eventually see more and more people installing them. I think they are a great security feature.

Any of us who work in Manhattan are well aware we are on camera just about everywhere we walk, especially in the Financial District.
