It is a school for special needs children, it used to be Whiperwhil Elementary years ago, but was closed due to the close proximity to the landfill behind it, and it was known to be causing serious health problems in the children that were attending there, so it is beyond me how they can let children with special needs use that building.

yikes.
I just heard similar info from someone else.
The info provided by momix5 is incorrect. The building was never closed because of the landfill. Back in the 80's a sensor went off in the cafeteria and parents panicked. Some pulled their kids from the building. There are no reorted cases of illnesses due to the environment. The building and grounds are tested nearly every year and there has never been a test that indicated there was a problem. Why would the school district house all their administrative offices there? There are even two residential streets between that building and the landfill.
This school is for special needs children and daycare children alike. They offer self-contained classes for children with more needs and they also offer integrated classes which is comprised of regular education and high functioning special education children.(usually speech impaired only). There are no health concerns regarding the building. The water has been tested and as stated by another person, why would Hauppague house their administrative offices there if it wasn't safe? The school itself is run by very caring, loving people who provide a fun language based program.
Does anyone have more information on the program itself? What are the outcomes of the children who go there? I have a high functioning toddler with speech delay and some cognitive delay ..I want to make sure that she will progress at the program rather than regress...Another question...Is is more like a glorified day care program?
The program is great, a high functioning toddler would most likely be put in an inclusion class where they would be around other typically/high functioning toddlers and be giving a speech therapist who they would see a few times a week. The only way your child would regress is if they were put in a self-contained class for disabled children which wouldn't happen.
To clarify my previous statement: The Opportunity Preschool (TOPS) is an amazing preschool for both special education students and typically developing students. The teachers, teacher assistants, psychologists, speech therapists, play therapists, social workers, occupational therapists, and principle are all well trained, caring and competent. Students who attend the school will receive all services they need and in class will be involved in gym, art, music, snack, lunch, outside time, reading time, games and more developmentally appropriate activities. Students are read to and participate in age appropriate activities that include puzzles, vocabulary increasing games, color recognition, matching games, sequencing activities, and exercises that are designed to increase speech and language skills, cognitive skills, gross motor, fine motor, adaptive, and socialization skills. A typically developing child would be placed in an inclusion class and a special needs child would either be placed in an inclusion or self-contained class depending on the child’s development and which class would benefit their growth most. I would recommend this school to all children! Parents are welcome to call with any questions or concerns: 631-863-3000
