Let's face it, taxes here will always be out of control. There's a $250K house near me, a cottage, $9.5K taxes. My parents' home that went for $600K didn't have taxes like that.

So where would you go, to save $$?

Queens is pretty affordable.

The New York City Job Market is good [compared to most other cities in the USA] so I wouldn't be leaving the tri-state for a long time.

Pittsburgh or France.
We are planning a move to one of those places by summer 2012. We just cannot keep paying the high costs here.

We just moved to LI after 10 yrs in Queens. It's pretty much a wash. If you live in the 5 boros you pay NYC income tax. You could save money if you didn't have a car. If you do, that is where your money goes. Parking fees if you garage it or tickets if you street park. You won't pay for the LIRR but if you live in a condo or co-op they will get you on the maintenance and you have to tip everybody.

It's a different lifestyle and it's fun if you don't have young kids. Great food. But not exactly cheap.

Pittsburgh and Buffalo are a coin flip.

No way.

Ohio maybe.

Northern or Central VA. DC has acted as a great buffer during the downturn so jobs are still available here.
