NWS to homeowners: Clean snow off roofs

We've still got at least 12" of snow on the roof. And rain is coming which will make it is soo heavy. With that roof collapse in Deer Park, considering getting a roof rake although according to the article it seems they are not to be found. Anyone else use one? How did it go? It is a daunting prospect...I am not the diy type with 2 elderly parents with limited mobility.

The lower the slope of the roof, the more likely of failure. A flat roof is most at risk. Most roof failures are due to changes and alterations of the structure. Be careful of removing snow from your roof as you can damage it and yourself! If you have a pitched roof , you should be fine.

I'm leaving my roof as is, and it will not collapse.

Good point...I have a dormered cape and you can actually see the difference in snow depth on the steeper side.

Home Depot in Commack actually stocked roof rakes, but we're sold out when I got there. I rolled my own using 1"PVC pipe, sheet metal, and wire. Worked like a charm.

Albeit flatter in appearance, Im actually of the understanding that a hip can bear significantly more than a gable?
Seems to make sense given the four brace points and the fact that it cant shift like a gable.

Whats your thoughts?
I dont see the point in getting up there....yet.

Angle of slope rules.......but if the slope is the same, a hip roof is stronger.

Seems contrary to conventional engineering in terms of weight distribution?
Real problems seem to like in roof valleys.

Were of an average slope but by no means flat.
Ill take a look.
