hey all, my last post was about 8 months ago, because I am looking to move back to NY - most likely suffolk county specifically, and wanted some input. currently live in atlanta, ga, been here 5 years. my wife's lived in georgia her whole life and although she's not convinced of the move, she's known that I've wanted to move back for about 4 and a half years. lol. what i want to ask everyone about now is nursing and midwifery jobs on long island, i'll provide more info later, but is anyone knowledgeable on the subject?? thanks
As a nurse, she can get hired pretty much anywhere. Midwifery, however, is a bit different. There isn't a high demand for midwives on the island since most women choose OBs for births.
thanks for the input. one question she has is about where they work, cuz here in georgia midwives work out of hospitals, but from what she's heard in new york they're out of birthing centers and she'd definitely rather work out of a hospital.....??
I remember hearing when St. Vincent's in lower Manhattan closed that it had been the last city hospital where midwives had privileges. Not sure about out on LI. I would think in general it's tougher for a midwife in NY because more women have children later and may be in a higher-risk situation where an OB is required.
I had my baby with a midwife 8 years ago, but it was in MA. They worked in a birthing center but had privileges at the local hospital as well. Awesome experience - never understood why more women don't go that route.
