hello all i am new to this site and am looking for some feedback on island park since i have been looking at real estate there and have been hearing mixed reviews about it. For one i heard it is a very close knit safe community but i have also heard that the amount of drug dealing there is outrageous for such a small town but i have looked around and have not found much information about the crime rate there or anything else for that matter....
can anyone here give me some of the pro's and con's of this place?

It depends on what YOU mean by Island Park?
Island Park is one of those villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of places with the community name as part of their mailing address (849 acres) are not in the community (270 acres): places that have an "Island Park, NY 11558" mailing address that are not in the Village of Island Park are in the Hamlet of Barnum Island and the Hamlet of Harbor Isle.

Pros:
Close to Oceanside's shopping
Close to Long Beach's beach
Can elect to send kids to one of two decent high schools Cons:
It's an eyesore
Lots of white trash live there
Al D'Amato lived there
Island Park used to be heavily Italian(might still be) and practically all white up until 20 or so years ago. It was a very close-knit community tightly controlled by certain residents. Racial steering was mandatory amongst real estate agents and sellers/landlords up until somebody blew the whistle on it sometime in the late 80's, maybe early 90's, I can't exactly recall, it was big news for a while especially due to the political connections and such within the community. Anyway, once they got called on this, they had no choice but to let minority families move in. Supposedly, according to the locals, this is when Island Park started going down the tubes. This is the story I got on Island Park.
I actually do not think it is that bad, it still seems like an "OK" place to live. Housing is pretty cheap and the village of IP actually has reasonable property taxes. Schools are ok too.
IP is not a destination. It's a drive-through town - you drive THROUGH it when going to OTHER places. You'll never hear anyone say:
"I'm going to Island Park to _______________________."

Not sure---but isn't another con noise from nearby JFK surroundings
