My brother and his wife had a baby last week. We will be staying with them all next week. They live in Chicago. They were told by their pediatrician that anyone who stays with them needs a DPT shot because the baby has not been immunized yet. I never heard of that. Any advice? I am going to get one and I need a note that I have to give to my brother so he can give it to the pediatrician.
There was been an increase in whopping cough which is highly contagious. My guess is that by having guests/visitors vaccinated, the baby will benefit from herd immunity until old enough to receive the vaccine.

That's pretty strict considering you're only staying for a week, but I think dtap is good to get whether or not there's a baby. Specifically for babies, it has vaccine for pertussis/whooping cough, which can cause very serious illness in young infants.
Thanks. First time I ever heard of this procedure. I had friends who had babies and we held them the day they were born no problem. Well If I want to see my nephew I have to do this. I am going with my mom on Tuesday to get it.

My 'baby' is 11 and we did not have to have guests provide proof of vaccine. She was a preemie, so she wasnt deluged with guests tight away, though. They washed their hands and cuddled her. The increase in whooping cough these past few years must be fueling this.
I'm curious how the pedi is going to stop you from staying there, LOL
I do know that they are advising women who are planning on having a baby to get vaccinated because this disease has become so prevalent again. Can't you just request it from your doctor?
My sister in law got the DPT shot right after she had the baby. I am getting vaccinated Tuesday. He can't stop us from staying there. I know you have to wash your hands alot when they are new born it's just I never heard of having to get vaccinated. I guess because we will be staying in their house with them for 6 days.He got very hostile with my mom when she questioned it.
