The railroad is much better than driving into the city, if you do drive, the traffic will wear you out in a couple of months, it did to me. I know take the railroad exclusively.
Yes it is. Depending on what station/branch you'll use, you'll have a better experience.
Some may consider the LIRR expensive, and at first glance it is. Driving has a fake financial advantage because you already have your car, and probably don't consider it an additional expense. But add just these two items.
Queens-Midtown Tunnel $13.00 per day = $260
Parking (monthly) $237
So thats $497 for driving compared to about $300 for the LIRR (depending on station)
The closer you are to the city, the shorter and cheaper the ride, but less likely you'll get a seat.
The AM ride is usually pretty quiet, the afternoon you want to murder the other passengers because they're obnoxious. (two , you're no seats, cell phones, etc)
Delays are common in unpleasant weather, but try to drive those days you're no better off.
I live in Long Island and will be working in New York City.
Just between us (and everyone that might read this), it's "I live *on* Long Island..." Not pickin' on you...just sparing you from some colloquial word nazi that...er...wait, I am a coloquial word nazi. Never mind.
You've gotten good, reasonable feedback already so let me join the chorus that LI-NYC via LIRR is not only doable but preferable. Aside from the cost comparison to support it don't underestimate the value of avoiding much of the stress driving would entail. Even if you don't think driving is stressful it's not as relaxing not driving.
Compared to other cities/metro areas, however, the LIRR doesn't seem all that reliable in moderate to bad weather. Consider how you'll get home if you can't get home via the LIRR. Have a back-up plan.
I also seem to have noticed that the Montauk, Ronkonkoma, and Port...Jefferson? branches seem to go "no service" or "delayed" quite a bit (I watch Traffic 12 News & Weather on tv). News 12 Long Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
