Why is our proximity to NYC seemingly exaggerated to seem further away than it really is?

But IMO, the New York City metro area is dictated by the MTA among other things. All of Long Island is serviced by the LIRR making it part of the New York metro area. There's really nowhere on Long Island I would consider outside the shadow of New York City.

The MTA services Port Jervis (84 miles from Times Square) and Poughkeepsie (81 miles) as well. The question is: At what point does one say they are no longer within the shadow of NYC?

And Montauk is like 100 miles from Times Square. Would you say Montauk is not in the shadow of New York City? New York is a pretty big city... it casts a pretty big shadow.
