Other than switching trains I never really hang around Hicksville much but decided to stop by the Broadway Mall this afternoon.
Walking up from the train station down Wycoff St thru a residential area there were landscaping trucks parked in driveways and on lawns, and parties of guys getting drunk. Another young guy had his dirty lawn stained pants down to his knees. Once inside the mall it was noisy, kids running all over the place and hardly anyone spoke english. The food court was filthy and the stores were messy. Lots of cars with out of state plates in the parking lot, mostly North Carolina and Texas.
Walking back along Newbridge toward W.John there's piles of litter by the fence, lots of Coconut Juice bottles and Lotto Scratch Offs.
Alot of the activity seems to center around the small strip of stores on the SW Corner of W.John and Newbridge, there's a new bodega that opened up there and some more guys just getting drunk and loitering in the parking lot.
I have to say I hated walking through this area more than Post Ave!
A far cry from the town Billy Joel grew up in..thats for sure.

Default Ruling class needs cheap labor

Billy Joel and his buddies were getting to expensive for the ruling class. To make matters worse they had a nasty habit of unionizing. The new guys may be a bit uncouth but they work cheap and don't make trouble with labor unions and what not.

Billy Joel and his ilk have been jettisoned to to Palookaville. See you later you middle class scum. This is a ruling class island for us and our workers.

The areas south of the mall but north of old country, off Broadway, Jerusalem ave have been seedy for years. Houses are full of day laborers.

Queens in itself is like the fifth-largest city in the country in terms of population and probably land too. The vast majority of Queens is lovely and ideal as far commute to Manhattan, you know, the reason we all live here, right? (otherwise, why not live in North Carolina?).

As let's be real, Long Island is for all the people who couldn't afford Queens. There's a reason why Western Nassau is more expensive than Suffolk. And as far as quality of life goes, I'm sure if you looked at the data per capita, Queens is probably safer than Suffolk. We don't have a huge population of bored high school kids doing heroin and killing people via drunk-driving.

If you're going to generalize, do it all ways and not just in your favor. The truth is all places have their pluses and minuses.

"Hicksville is now Jamaica." You obviously haven't been to Jamaica. For starters, Jamaica is at least 80% black. Hicksville isn't even 2% black.

Ehhh, not its not. Long Island property taxes do a good job of keeping all the Queens/Bklyn people away. I should know, my parents wanted to move to the Floral Park/Franklin Square / Lynbrook/Valley Stream area - and the sticker shock they got from the overall housing prices/taxes kept them in Queens..

And yes - Hicksville isnt the only town to "go down the tubes" so to speak with respect to the "cream of society" populating the areas - if you look around, there are more minorities in LI than in prior decades, and as the years go on - they will only increase as the NYC population starts to edge out all the way to Montauk. If you hate the way it is now, you should move to North Carolina.

Becoming more "Queens-like" would be the best thing for many LI locations and in doing so would help their neighboring communities. Like you said, the demographics will change regardless. Do you handle it by pretending it's 1955and nimbying down with illegal apartments, business exodus and school tax increases... or devlop transportation based housing, a few apartment buildings, some 'downtown" business hubs and high density areas?

Pretty sure tomorrows vote will be for more of the same old same old.

You're dreaming if you think western Nassau or even all of Nassau is more exspensive because it's closer to Queens.

Ever hear of that boro known as Manhattan?
