Lived there for about 4 years from 2005-2008, I just wanted some opinions of how it is now?

Do you feel like PJS is getting like Brentwood and CI and Glen Cove now, with its high influx of people of Dominican and Puerto rican descent?

The village is getting pretty dangerous with all the bars down there now, with a lot of gang activity, and the train station area, now that the bikers are gone, leaves a lot to be desired.

It's sad, because I used to frequent the Ihop there almost every Saturday morning with my friends, and I read it was recently robbed at gunpoint.

What do you feel the problem is? Since PJS has probably the third highest Dominican population in Suffolk (Brentwood and CI being first and second) along with Glen Cove in Nassau.

I am in no way racist and am not trying to blame Dominican ppl for the problem, but It seems like that a lot of people who are re-locating from the city areas like Queens and the Bronx are bringing some people of questionable motives.

Not in the sligthest. Slow down.

It has a lot of problems - but it is nowhere near a CI or Brentwood.

I mean don't get me wrong I should not have to press 1 for English in America. But this could start a whole other huge thing.

Lol....you mistake me I have no problems with diversity, it just seems that the last three years PJS has gone down a little bit, so it it because of gangs, or some other factors??

FYI - The IHOP was robbed at knifepoint, the guy didn't even rob the cash register, he went straight up to a few customers and robbed them. It was bizarre.

Dominicans have lived in this town for years. The Puerto Ricans in this town are few and far between and the ones I know have been here for years as well. They aren't a problem. As a matter of fact, my neighbors for the past 20 years are Dominicans. (They are some wonderful neighbors by the way).

We have a very unique situation in the upper port area of a lot of homeless spilling over from Pax Christie/Hope House and also from the Day Rehab Center and the rehab at Mather Hospital. Not to mention the train station is right there. We have a huge drug problem on this island and people are bused in to these facilities. 99% of the problem in Port Jeff is not FROM Port Jeff.

People also like to blame illegal immigrants for bringing the town down, and while I understand that with illegal immigrants do come some issues, I feel the weight of the problem lies on the above ^. We also don't have nearly as many illegal immigrants in Port Jeff as there are in Brentwood/CI.

Take it from a resident. It's still a nice place to live. There's a LOT more to Port Jeff Station than the Upper Port area. There's plans to "revitalize" the area by upper port. I like the diversity of the neighborhood.

God forbid! hahaha

My husband's from S. America originally. I'm a NYer, but grew up speaking Spanish too. We're trying to teach our kids Spanish so they can communicate with their family, I wish someone other than us would speak Spanish to them!

Our best friends are in Belgium and their kids speak FOUR languages! Yes, FOUR! It's amazing and super impressive.

Very good to hear! I am sure there are a lot of hard working, legit Dominican families who work hard....

Its the riff raff that comes from the city that ruins it.

Although the Dominican population of PJS is very high, I don't think thats the problem......

Illegal immigrants come to this country to work and earn money - they are very unlikely to give you the problems that come from the professional poor, drug addicts, people who've never worked a day in their lives etc.

I live in Port Jeff Village now but Port Jeff Station always had a homeless problem along with Upper Port. The Cherub Lane area is pretty bad. Its been overflowing from Upper Port since I don't know when. There have been stabbings/armed robberies in PJS and there are some Dominican/ Mexican gangs in the area. You can read the police blotters to get a better idea. Also a lot of Mexicans and blacks are moving into the area by the Train and Heatherwood apartments. I've also heard about people selling coke on the corner mostly in the Terryville area. West PJS mostly has a pill problem coming from its proximity to East Setauket.
